Welding Experience
    #10023670 -

Does anyone have any experience with welding? I have a right front spindle for my 4-wheeler that recently broke off. My question is could this be welded back without having any problems? Also put in mind that, This particular part has a lot of stress would it hold up?

Thanks everyone the link to the part is right here

http://www.sobcr.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/1/Suzuki.aspx

The part number is (2-3) the part that broke is the rod you see sticking out with the treaded end. Which holds the rim in place.

I have a very small amount of experience.

I think welded connections are often stronger than the original piece...its something like because the molecules go every which way and it makes it harder for them to slide past each other? I've definitely heard something like that from one of my engineering colleagues.

It seems like it might would work but, The part would have to be almost perfect because the part has to slide in flush with the bearings inside the rim.

I am just trying to get this sorted out without having to pay $115 dollars for that part. An I have no welding experience at all. I might just take the risk to get it welded hell what could it hurt right?

I'm not sure. I don't want to click on your picture because I'm installing linux and everything is extremely slow right now, but if you think its worth a try, go for it.

If you are using a MIG welder just don't complete the circuit with your body. You'll die instantly.

you may be looking at addition costs if there's more than welding
involved, some areas may need to be machined, if the material is
cast iron welding becomes a little more difficult and while the
weld may be stronger the heat and shrinkage may weaken the areas
around the weld

your link takes us to a parts lookup, this is the actual spindle, I assume it's what this attaches to

Hell yeah thats it not exact but, Along those lines. I don't need the hole part Just the spindle. What sucks is that they do not sell just that particular spindle alone. Unless I find a 03 model laying around.

Also Prisoner you're right about it costing more than the part its self.
I Plan on taking it 2 one of my friends friends that will do it for free and maybe me and my friend can grind down the spindle to the right size.

Its worth a try no matter what unless buddie charges me for it.

My welding instructor use to say, "The weld should last longer than the steel it's on."

That's why he would always grade are welds with a hammer(no joke)..lol

If your weld bent/broke before the metal you had to re-do it :frown:

if it's the spindle shaft, it'll require machining, and it will
lose strength, here's another image, may not be exact but if
it's similar point out the part that's screwed, you may beable
to find after market parts cheaper, suzuki like to keep a lock
on suzuki parts, it keeps the cost high

Its thats looks really close to it. The long threaded thing. Thats what broke clean in half! So you don't think it would last long after getting welded?

Maybe it would last long enough for me to have a little fun or to get the money up?

my welds were tested with a 300 ton press, I had 2 failures in 18mos

my pops took a truck to have the frame welded where it had
broke, a few years later he hit the gas and the frame broke
again right behind the weld (gusseted repair) I got to looking
and what the guy did was welded all the way around his gussets,
when the metal cooled it pulled at the frame, the driving cause
more stress and it eventually broke again, I fixed it the second
time and didnt close the ends, after 15 years it's still solid

there's a lot of knowledge to be learned about metals and welding

wouldnt last long unless the welds penetrated deep enough, that
would require a lot of grinding and after welding a lot of
machining, you'd be better off waiting to buy another, gimme the
year make and model as well as displacement, I may be able to
find some after market parts a good bit cheaper

Thanks man! For real I am going to get out there and try and get the part off. I don't know if I will be able to because, I tend to get pissed of if something does not go right working on shit like that. I guess I am not mechanically smart like some people.

I will update this thread or send you a p/m if I get it fixed or something!

no sense in getting pissed at a scooter, hit the parts store and
get a pickle fork (tie rod separator), they're about $15, it makes
removing the tie rods and ball joints from the spindle a lot less
frustrating

$96 for OEM on the right, $115 for the left, they're calling it the
steering knuckle because it's a whole assembly, if the spindle can
be pressed out, then it'll be a lot cheaper for just a spindle

Yeah when something fucks up I get the OEM parts. An I knew it was the steering knuckle fuckings sucks they just can't sell that one part.
