The gravel is optional its just there to definitely create airspaces.

The only other thing I would have to point out is that you absolutely need to have a filter disc on the lid.

Enriched with Miracle-Gro, and more than likely supplemented with a fungus inhibitor, or even fungicide.

But more than likely a chemical which inhibits or hinders the growth of fungi. You have to think they don't want
their customers complaining about fungi killing their plants in their potting soil. Customers would expect the soil
to be good for the plant.

And chemically altering the soil can have effects on bacteria as well.

There's an alternative potting soil called organic potting soil.
I'm not sure of what "organic-potting-soil" consists of so I couldn't tell you if they treat it.

Well I suppose its a good choice for grain, it would make the morel really really fight for survival and form sclerotia.

sorghum.  basically wbs without the.....bs.  of course i put on filter discs.  :laugh:  yeah, that potting soil was leached all summer long, to the point where my neglected tomatoes died from lack of nutrients.  there's no fungicide in it.  Part of the reason peat is such a good plant growth medium is that it drains well, which means there's no reason to add fungicide.  unless you're growing plants that are especially susceptible to rot.  my biggest sclerotium is actually in one of the potting soil jars.

Now considering that it was "leached" was it pasteurized? And do you think it has the good microbes I've been talking about after being
leached?

You should have tried to mix it with a little soil from a known morel spot, to see if it would yield better results.

Mycelio has gotten that much micro-sclerotia development in his jars too. And a lot of other people too; me included, but that
stuff that developes on the sides of the jars is never really a solid mass. And it never produces anything when the patent methods
are applied.

Maybe I'll try the pasteurization thing if i don't get good sclerotia in these jars.  I would probably add the pasteurized layer after some grain is colonized.  As for the sand, I just had some sand lying around so I figured I'd try it.  Sclerotia are forming between the sand and grain, so it's acting as a barrier, as you said.  I might also try straight up grain soaked in water/coffee.

Hey faffle...since a few folks have patented the process because it works so well, have you considered following their patented process's for growing your Morchella?

I don't believe a whole lot from that patent.  If the company who grows them followed those procedures exactly, it would be so costly they wouldn't make a profit.

Ok, here we go...see I was flipping through the patents thinking since they all had the same title it was the same patent over and over. I was wrong. If you do a search up top for Morchella, you'll get about 8 patents.

This one is more applicable.

It seems like the general ideas for sclerotia production are true, but they're leaving out the key to fruitbody formation.  I'm hoping I can get big enough sclerotia to test this idea I have.

They laid out the necessary fruit body formation, like what sorts of nutrients to put the sclerotia in and the environment and Rh, I didn't think you needed a substantial much more for that. I read through this one...it seemed pretty thourough near the end as far as fruitbody formation.
