    #9848600 -

Just seen on Fox News that Pres. Obama is looking at the cuban embargo. He stated that he also wants to meet with Cuban Pres. Alot of talk about what it would take to repeal the embargo.

It would take a vote in Congress.  That's all.

If the embargo is repealed it would definitely go a long way towards improving Cuban quality of life, hell maybe they could get some new cars.

it was America's #1 vacation destination before the revolution

there were really nice hotel resorts and stuff

Castro came in to distribute the wealth around, there was a problem with their either being really rich or really poor in Cuba. Castro's solution was to make everyone really poor.

Cuba is a poor country because it is a poor country, not because it is a Communist one. There are plenty of poor Capitalist countries as proof of this.

It would be richer if the world's wealthiest country hadn't of embargoed it for the past 45+ years....

I find it remarkable that the US, supposedly the "land of the free", forbids its citizens from visiting a neighbouring country.

Does it really? I can't think of far more absurd restrictions than that in the US.

Let me try....

In the US, they do not allow marijuana seeds, unlike the UK and Canada, to be purchased or even posess them. But we can have shroom spores?

There is THC in seeds.  There is no Psilocybin in spores.  You can get high from seeds.  You can't from spores.

Given that Cuba trades with the entire rest of the world and for decades was a recipient of Soviet welfare you'd think that a silly thing like a US embargo wouldn't be a death sentence to their economy.  Unless it is because communism is a death sentence to an economy.  Whoa, what a concept.

So, then, what's the point for the embargo? To send them a message? To make an example of them? "If you become communist then we will place travel restrictions on our own citizens!"

Message, I guess, but even that's a relic at this point.  I don't give two shits about it either way any more.  They can go fuck themselves forever for all I care.

So you agree the embargo may as well be dropped?

May as well.  I don't see any particular reason either way.  Dominican cigars are better.

Are you sure about that? Prior to the revolution Cuba had a higher standard of living than fucking Britain. And their peso was equal to the US dollar.

The problem for a politician isn't whether zappa cares, but whether the couple million rabid anti-Castro folks in America care, which they do.

They tend to vote in far greater numbers than your average American, as is common with immigrants from actually oppressive regimes.

As far as the socialism/capitalism dichotomy(whether it is real or perceived) is concerned I am neutral. However there is something you should know about the history of cuba. During the 90's due to the collapse of the soviet union cuba was barely able to import any oil. People started engaging in community farming projects in order to survive and people were even taking soil and putting it on top of their garages in order to make farms. During the 90's cubans were certainly in a dire situation, I am not sure what the situation is like currently in cuba. I do not know the full nature of the usa embargo and whether or not the usa influences other countries to restrict their trade with cuba.

To forbid Americans to visit cuba certainly infantilizes the American population to a degree.
