Creative Cubans (I want one of these things)
    #1747529 - 07/25/03 08:56 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

KEY WEST - Over the past four decades, Cubans desperate to reach the United States have crossed the perilous Florida Straits in just about anything that floats: Surfboards. Inner tubes. Homemade rafts.

But it's hard to top the latest entrant in the maritime scramble: a 1951 Chevy flatbed truck.

The green truck, tires still on, was mounted on a pontoon made of 55-gallon drums. The makeshift vessel even sported a propeller, attached to the truck's drive shaft.

It was cruising along at a leisurely 8 mph, with a driver behind the wheel, when it was spotted by a U.S. government plane 40 miles south of Key West on July 16.

Cameron Hintzen, supervisor for the U.S. Border Patrol in the Keys, has seen his share of Cuban contraptions that have made the crossing. But Hintzen, who saw photos of the truck at sea, called it ``the most creative vessel I have seen so far.''

Ingenuity, however, didn't translate to success. The U.S. Coast Guard took the dozen Cubans aboard the truck back to the island last weekend.

The Coast Guard, calling the truck a ''hazard to navigation,'' sank it.

Sucks that they got taken back :|

I agree.  That was a great little contraption.  Not only were they taken back, but their "boat" was sunk.

If all the Cubans want to be Americans, why don't we just liberate them and make them a part of our colonial empire?

I heard that in exchange for Russia taking their nukes out of Cuba, we agreed never to invade. Of course, Bush don't care about international agreements, so now would be the time!

This seems more pressing than ever.

Q. What's the first thing a cuban does when he gets a flat tire?

A. Drown.

I think it's stupid that there are trade embargo's still active against cuba over shit which doesn't even matter now.. Also try and tell me that during the cuban missile crisis america didn't have nuclear missile's within range of every Soviet city.. If you threaten people with nukes don't be surprized when they threaten you back..

Having them in range and having them right off their coast are two different things. It isn't stupid to have an embargo against Castro either. He is another dictator that won't let his people live freely. If it is so great there why are so many of them trying to get here?

I think Fedel is a fairly evil guy,but he's not as bad our government and media make him out to be.Cuba's always been a shithole. The U.S. backed regimes before the revolution were far worse. At least Cuba has one of the highest litteracy rates in the world and for that region a fairly high standard of living.

Why do they have to use deadly force to keep people from escaping? That's kind of a good indication of a dictatorship.

True, but the media would have you believe that Cuba is actually a large threat to America.

I don't see how Cuba could be construed as being a threat to anything but it's own people.

When the soviets existed, sure. Now they're a minor nuisance.

The media doesn't give me the impression that Cuba is a threat to the U.S., or that the U.S. goverment feels that it is.

Cubans can leave Cuba if they want, but they have to leave behind everything they own, they can't take any wealth with them.

Not even wedding rings.

Well, that's only fair. Since Cuba is a Socialist country, it's a given that possessions belong to "the people", not to a person.

Do they get to take their clothes? Their eyeglasses?
