Third Grow- An Experiment Popcorn vs. Coir/P.Mexicana vs. P.Cubensis Equador
    #9506730 -

Hello dear shroomery members. First I want to thank you for the support and information you have given me in the past. Recently I decided to do a little experiment and I think the least I can do to express my gratitude for the help is share the results and that way be of help for the future generations of growers and also ask some questions.
Here is the situations. I have 54 300 ml jars. 20 of them are filled with popcorn, 34 with cococoir fibers. I have added around 5 % of humus and a half a teaspoon of gypsum. Everything has been pressure cocked for 1 hour and 30 minutes. I inoculated 20 jars(10 corn/10 coir) with P. Cubensis Equador and 34 (10 corn/ 24 coir) with P.Mexicana. I have ordered the spores from FSRE.

Day 1(3 hours since inoculation) On the left is the Equador, on the right the Mexicanas.

This is the incubator. The temperature is 26 degree Celsius.
I will keep you updated.

the reason being is that theres no nutritional value in coir that mycelia use for culturing. Its used in the casing stage...

Coir is organic. It does contain nutritions. Do a search. It is claimed to be superior to grain substrates and i want to see for myself if this is true.

You need to inoculate grains or brf cakes with spores if you want results.  Inoculating coir with spores will give you nothing.

P mexicana is a species, not a strain.

I've never seen coir used in jars... can you elaborate on how this might be true instead of issuing of being childish and not contributing? Thx...

Interesting. I gotta tell that to the 3 pounds fresh cubes that I harvested from 3 trays of rye berries spawned to straight coir just before Christmas. They'll be very surprised to learn they've been feeding off of nothing.
It's not used in jars, it's used as a bulk substrate and it is a very good one at that. Your info is outdated.
You can mix it with straw, poo, throw in some coffee grinds, worm castings... but it will perform very well by itself. And mycelium just rips through that stuff like mad, too.

I've used it as a bulk substrate as well... and it works well. But using it in jars was unknown to me. I've been partial to rye jars or LGBR jars. Didn't mean to offend... I'm curious to see how those jars turn out.

Interesting. No one called out grod31 for claiming you can't inoculate coir... I guess my info has been outdated for an hour and 13 minutes... (sigh, how fast technology evolves)...

Indeed. Check out this coir tray (popcorn spawned to coir, verm & coffee)

Does that look like mushrooms growing on a non-nutritious substrate?

e.
You're being a bit inconsistent... first you say coir can only be used as casing, then you say you have used it as bulk substrate. Which is it?

You DON'T inoculate it, you SPAWN to it. Maybe there's a bit of a misunderstanding going on here. You use rye berries, WBS or popcorn (or even BRF cakes that you break up) as spawn and coir as the substrate.

I think I said "Its used in the casing stage." As in casing a bulk substrate. NOT in a jar... geesh. Thx guys...

Then you're using incorrect terminology. I don't even case my bulk substrates, casing and spawning to bulk are two different animals.

Casing as a verb refers to the act of applying a casing layer to a colonized bulk substrate or colonized grain. Casing as a noun refers to the casing layer. So, you do NOT use coir in "the casing stage", you use it before the casing stage, in the "spawning stage".

Can anyone comment on this: If his coir does not grow, he can then just use it to spawn the popcorn to, no? So essentially, if he uses exactly what he has a bit differently, if the people who say coir wount support the spores, he can use it as a bulk sub.

If so, no harm, no foul

Thanks for the support. I will see how things develop. If there are no signs of germinations, at least there will be a thread to post links to, when another noob, who didn't read well enough, makes such a foolish attempt. But why can't mycelium colonize coir? It has nutritions. I am not questioning the statements of experts such as RR, I am just curious what is the reason. If you can give me some materials explaining what kind of substrate (nutritions, mineral content, microorganisms) mushrooms do need.
EDIT: Can you give me a link to a good LC technique and a good guide for spawning. I used the search functions, but most threads I find are just questions about ratio, preparation and such. Is it necessary to use spawn bags, because I don't have access to such kind of equipment.
