Growing in Japan - beginner - help!

I live in Japan, and I am interested in growing mushrooms for my first time. I am debating on where to order from, but I have looked at Hawk's Eye Spores and I think that probably is the best option, right? I have a couple of questions actually, I am a beginner, so bear with me. First of all, I cannot obtain spore prints/syringes from dried mushrooms that they sell here in stores in Japan? I have a 10cc syringe, actually 2 of them, laying around (don't ask - came with a science kit), but no needles. Where can I get some needles? Second of all, if I did order spores they are shipped descretely right? Does anybody here have any expereince with buying the stuff needed to grow mushrooms here in Japan? I am not sure where to get some of the supplies, and would love some help =). Growing inside is the only way right? And the last question, bear with me, can I grow them under my bed or something like that? I know that either sounds like a 12 year old is asking, or I just am completely obliviouse to how mushrooms grow, but I am seriouse. Anyways, thanks people for the help!

<I am debating on where to order from, but I have looked at Hawk's Eye Spores and I think that probably is the best option, right? > There are many other places, hawk's eye is good tho <First of all, I cannot obtain spore prints/syringes from dried mushrooms that they sell here in stores in Japan?> it would be VERY hard if not impossible. you would need a microscope and agar <Where can I get some needles? Second of all, if I did order spores they are shipped descretely right? > Yes most places are discreet, they also ship your spores in syringes, or you can buy them empty from suppliers, check the vendor forum <Does anybody here have any expereince with buying the stuff needed to grow mushrooms here in Japan? > not me but i hear there legal there! <Growing inside is the only way right? And the last question, bear with me, can I grow them under my bed or something like that? > You can grow indoors or outdoors . If the temperatures outside are appropriate then your in good luck. Yes you can grow them under your bed. I know ryche uses this as a little hook on his site. But this can be done with out his "magical" compost. Get some books on mushrooms and makesure to read posts. Also if your interested in getting cheap supplies you can check out the link in my sig. and go to Drool Donkey Island where we have a nice list of companies providing affordable products. peace and good luck

Hello! I am moving to Japan in less than two weeks (Jet Programme). I have about two years successful mushroom growing experience (all legal stuff, of course!) and would like to continue the tradition in the Far East. This is particularly important if they ban psilocybes, as is being discussed in the Diet right now... At any rate, I would love to talk to other folks in Japan who have similar interests. I will be located in southern Japan, between Ehime and Hiroshima Prefectures. Drop a line if you would like to chat. jcl3x@yahoo.com

they sell them at grocery stores? why dont you just buy them. if they were that available then i wouldve never even had the idea to start growing. i didnt think it was pssible, i thought that you could only get them from cow shit. i personally think the hwks eye sucks becuase they advertise too much and make it so anyone can grow shrooms without any experience. shrooms are not something to toy with and you should have to work hard for them cus they give soooooo much in return. i also dont like them because they have genius mycologists with huge labs growing their shrooms so when you look at the shrooms theres hundreds of perfect shrooms growing from this tiny casing (that they made with spawn first and got alot more usable substrate) this is like false advetising because most newbies like you arent going to get that amount of shrooms UNLESS you buy his dung bros. setup for an extra 75 bucks. as for supplies if you have a home depot or other hardware stores then you will most likely be able to get vemiculite there and i dont think that brf should be a problem since theres so much rice over there and all the people that work at the health food stores i buy mine at are asian. you can also take normal brown rice and put it through a coffee grinder and get these little chunks of usable brown rice chunks, but make sure you add more water. theres also a tek out there that uses normal brown rice. i dont know about the water out there though, id recomend using bottled or distilled water. you can deffinately cultivate under youre bed, go to www.fanaticus.com (a websit that tells you how to grow shrooms) and look at the hippie tek. wont youre parents like beat you to death or something of they catch you doing something like that (not giving proper respect or some weird asian thing like that) keep in mind that when youre around them and talking to them you will have the fact that youre growing shrooms on youre mind and will be acting differently. unless you dont live with youre parents (but then you wouldnt need to grow under youre bed)
just because you stick feathers up youre butt does not make you a chicken.

You should be able to find everything you need in Japan. I don't know what they might call the vermiculite but if you are stuck, you can always get some from the SporeLab.
Take a trip to the Spore Lab @: http://www.SporeLab.com email: getspores@sporelab.com

Well, yes, you can buy them in the stores, but they are very expensive and of marginal quality. Homegrown cubensis are better than most of the wild store bought stuff in Japan. There are exceptions, but shrooms can be grown for almost nothing -- if I can find the supplies.

If you want to go with PF Tek but still can't find vermiculite you allways could use a substitute, i've used grinded vulcanic rock with great results, also you can break down some adobe pots and use the small gravel to make the substrate with BRF.

Thanks a lot man. I will be in Japan before too long, and I am sure I will be back here begging for help again. I am confident in finding the materials for a basic PF tek deal, but I was thinking something a bit nicer, involving casing, refrigerator, etc. I like challenging myself, and get quickly bored with watching mycelium spread in a half pint canning jar...

Any growers in Japan now? Looking for some help in getting this operation off the ground, now that the legal supply has dried up.
