Well, what benefit do you personally reap from psychedelic usage?

If one is already serene and content, what further point is there in using a psychedelic apart from curiosity?

Difficult to answer.

All I can say is, I personally doubt anyone acheives unending serenity or contentment at some point in their lives.

I don't think psychedelics necessarily bring these qualities, but help one get in touch with a spark of pure awareness.

And, like lion said, I think you can always be more aware.

I agree, but is there a limit to awareness?  Or is this an endless chase of one's own tail down the rabbit hole?

So how do atheists grow spiritually?

The same way theists grow spiritually, except they are wholly responsible for their actions.

I am fully responsible for my actions. Why would being a theist make you not responsible for your own actions?

At the risk of sounding like a hippy, I personally believe that it is essentially a matter of respect.  I tend to think of psychedelics as entities (metaphorically of course).  In my experience, whenever I have gone into a psychedelic experience with an open mind and good intentions, I have been rewarded with profound insights and an opportunity to restructure my personality and literally change my life.

However, there have been times when after having an experience of this nature and realizing how rewarding it can be, I have gotten greedy, tripping more frequently to see what further rewards I could harvest from the experience.  To put it simply, even though I wasn't addicted or using the drugs every day, I was abusing them, and it was at this point that they started to "lose their magic."  I had begun to view LSD as a tool to be used for my own personal gain rather than a powerful entity deserving of respect.

"When you get the message, hang up the phone."

I think this is such a great quote in the context of psychedelics, as this was exactly the mistake that I made.  I got the message loud and clear, but I stayed on the phone waiting to hear more.

At the risk of being a hippy, I completely agree with you and the same thing happened to me in my greed. At this point of my life, my Lady and I trip maybe 2-3 times per year. The greed is gone and our lives are psychedelicized. I'm not in an age range and hence social position to come by acid, but if I had access, I would certainly still avail myself of it. I would not be walking around with a couple of blotters taped inside my wallet like when I was 20, but I don't even know any 55 year old tripsters other than myself.

The Alan Watts quote is from his early work A Joyous Cosmology and it is still appropos today. One should not expect to live continuously in a Nirvikalpa Samadhi, but one should aspire to the 'Natural State' of Sahaj Samadhi. This is equivalent to the Buddhist Jhanas of equanimity, as opposed to the less stable blissful Jhanas. Or again, in Christian mysticism, Ecstasis has its place, but the Unitive State is more of a [Gnostic] Knowing of one's moment-to-moment awareness of Being-in-God. It is Zen. It is Sat Chit Ananda, but the ananda [bliss] is not one of euphoria (and hence a tickled ego), but rather the extremely subtle clarity of Pure Awareness, even beyond bliss.

In Vajrayana literature, one does not live in the 'Experience of OM.' It is like being at the peak of Mt. Everest - very rarified atmosphere, very very intense, but sterile. Human life cannot endure it for long. One needs to descend from the peak (like Moses) and take the epiphany down into the human realm of multiplicity among 'other' sentient beings, teaching by example as the only valid expression of what has transformed you on the mountain top. Hence, entheogenic excursions need to stop being special occasions and take over one's entire life - without the psychedelic catalyst.

There are two classes of Jhanas?

My understanding is there aren't two classes of Jhanas, there are just eight Jhanas.  As one ascends, they become more subtle and marked by deep calm and silence rather than euphoria.

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Good post Markos.  You kind of lost me with some of the terminology in the second paragraph but I will look into it as it sounds like we have had similar experiences in this regard.
