    #939149 - 10/07/02 08:25 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

i foud these yesterday, and would like some help in id. i admit, i have not done much homework myself (don't have my books with me right now). they were very large specimens, , caps 5" to 10", cap col chessnut, as in pic, spongy, undercap white/beige (no yellow) . found in east long island (ny), in pine grove, close to other bolete of different types, and many amanitas. one cluster with approx 10 very large specimens.

I just found some of these myself and they are looking like orange birch boletes.
Leccinum versipelle (Fr. & Hok) Snell (Orange Birch-bolete)
http://www.bioimages.org.uk/HTML/R31972.HTM
They are very good looking and quite tasty too. Be careful to examine them closely for maggots as I have found that even one or two tiny holes in the stem usually means there are larvae eating away inside. Slice them into thin strips and look for holes. Enjoy!

boleti prints are usually superfluous.
most boleti can be relatively easily narrowed to species, or very closely related species, macroscopically.
did it have a lot of flecks of dark color on the stipe? like a web, kinda, but dirty looking?
the leccinums all have scabrous stalks. the boleti generally have some reticulations and texture on the stipe, but not very often colored or dark like leccinum.
suillus are slimy on top.
i love to eat leccinums.
i have eaten many that could not be keyed to species by my inept key skills, with no deleterious effects.
toxicman relates an interesting story about the consumption of an unknown leccinum that caused gatrointestinal discomfort enough for someone to report to a hospital. the mushrooms were sent to a leccinum specialist (? i forget) who had written the monograph of the genus, and he determined that it was an undiscovered species.
thats just one story.
for the most part, these are some of the safest mushrooms to eat, as are boleti in general.....
i would say that you should get some of the younger specimens from the area and have a small (a few bites) meal with them and wait twenty four hours.
the most you would suffer from those mushrooms would be some diarrhea.
propbably not though.
and imo, them are good eatin!!!!

nah.
i just moved to the pacnw from the midwest. (how trite, hunh?)
anyway, the season on the different species in my are was kinda variable.
too many factors at work. temp, rain etc. all i know is to seek out similar habitat nearby and elsewhere. quit your job and hunt all day, then you're sure to find all the spots.....
i dont have that many worthwhile suggestions, sorry.
i think your season could be rather long, as the succession of species seems staggered somewhat. good luck, keep posting finds!!!
eat em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The photo's kind of small, so it's hard to tell, but those look like Leccinum. Identifying to species is dependent on habitat and bruising. To check the bruising, cut one in half vertically, scrape the inside with the edge of your knife, and note the color changes for 10 or 15 minutes and where they happen.

toxic, thank you, i'll do as instructed. not that i would touch some w/o 100% id, but would have any idea of the worst case scenario in the event of a mistaken id for those specimens, for what you can see from the pic (did you try clicking on it?)

When I try to click on that photo nothing happens. Something is set up wrong.

If they are indeed Leccinum, then the worst that would happen would be an evening of vomiting and diarrhea. This page has good photos (look especially at the stems of the second two photos) and mentions that we know there is a poisonous species of Leccinum, but we don't know which it is. The toxic species seems to be associated with aspens (that is in common with all the reports I am familiar with).

The stem is the characteristic part to ID to genus Leccinum. After that it can be pretty difficult to do.

If you decide to eat them, we've been recommending that you cut your specimen in half vertically and save half in the refrigerator. That way if you get sick we can have a specimen in an herbarium which is *known* to have made somebody sick. I have been eating Leccinum for over 25 years without a problem, but I know a couple people who have encountered the poisonous species. They're OK tasting, but not as good as cepes.

thank you, toxic, you're right, the pic doesn't enlarge. i don't have the specimens with me, so i can't check them right now, but i will go back where i found them this week-end to collect more, i hope. i will be carful of stipe color/texture & report back. i am posting another pic of them, hopefully you can see them better:
