more boleti from the n.e./id help(viscid ?)

here are more boleti i collected last week end in a pine grove on eastern long island (ny). i believe the third on the right is another leccinus, like the larger ones i posted in other thread. i haven't done homework on the other two below, any help is appreciated (the specimens in the pics below are all quite similar in size, caps 2" to 4")

Looks like the one on left could be a bitter bolete, does it have a pinkish hue (as George Costanza might say) to the gills? It has white flesh and tastes real bitter if you try a tiny bite. The Red topped one looks like Boletus Bicolor, should be yellow gills and stains to blue/green when bruised.  The last one cant be seen clear enough to call, but looks like a Leccinum. These are boletes it would be good to know the spore color for. You should also cut each one in half vertically and let us know about any color changes and if the stems are solid or hollow. I'll take some guesses anyway.

The first one looks a lot like Boletus separans. Spores brownish ochraceous.
The second looks similar to Boletus bicolor. Spores olive brown.
The third looks like Austroboletus subflavidus. The stalk on this one doesn't look like it has scabers, the feature you should see for Leccinums. Instead, it seems to show reticulation (reticulum = net, in Latin), raised ribs that give the stalk a pitted appearance. If this ID is correct it will be inedible because it's bitter tasting. Spores reddish brown.

hey comario.
i'm flattered by the use of my name in your id request, but you will find my skills far inferior to toxicman's.
my only immediate guess was the bicolor.
and as such, it is merely a guess.
i have eaten leccinum versipelle, aurantiacum, and scabrum.
i have also eaten other leccinums that i could not key to species.
taste tests are not forbidden in these generra.
bitter specimens are often bitter in the field. easy to toss (if your primary interest is food).
the specimens you have provided are pretty, but they alone are somewhat inadequate.
it seems that with boletus, the host tree is of enough significance as to make it invaluable.
also, characteristics like patterns in the pores, colors on all parts of the fruitbody, and staining, especially over time, as toxic man said in a previous post, are crucial.
when i said before that they were relatively EASY, i just meant that for me it has been relatively easy to decide if any particular boletus was table worthy.
my interest in fungi has many facets, but as of yet i have not taken up the microscope, and my experience on your side of the continent is limited.
in short, i would trust toxicman.
and any attempts at further id from me would be mere guesses.
if i were to find specimens like those in the first and third photo, in sufficient quantity for a meal, and qualitatively qualifying, i would definitely give them the taste test, then pore thru Mushrooms Demystified, my key book that cost me 80 bucks, my roger philips, my smiths and otherwise.
the more info at home at hand, the closer and more confident you can be...
anyways. i'm jealous. they look perfectly delicious, whether they are or not.
keep hunting and posting. as soon as i get a card reader for my stupid camera, i'll be posting my oregon finds. as of yet, the pickens are still slim.

1.nothing to blush about: you are excellent at id!

2. since i didn't have my manuals with me at the time (yes, i have arora, etc) i only took pics of the specimens. i'm going back this week end with all my books + camera & paper bags (hopefully tonight it will rain)

3 yeah, in this area (new england) my hunting interests/targets, quite necessarily, are only edibles (that is, until i am succesful in introducing azures in the wild here -just kidding, not even stamets could do that)

4 come on, now, we are all waiting for you to get a f digicam!

whoa.
i think you could introduce azures there. it has been done in a surprisingly large number of places remote from its origins. you guys have weather that would seem appropriate.
as you might have gleaned, my interest leans towards edibles, as is only logical, since they are so numerous and not illegal.
i do have a camera, but my girlfriend lost a bag in the bangkok airport with the usb cable (along with indonesian wood sculptures and batiks and all types of gifts.)
so, the memory cards are full, and posting thru the library is impossible without usb.
i will be posting pics soon enough, hopefully in time for the first actives of the year.
i went out to the mountains with joshua yesterday, and we saw little but gomphidius, mycena, and russula. and few of them. i did see an emergent hericium abietis, though, and hope to eat that sucker soon.
i rarely bring books with me on hunts, because i hunt everywhere, all the time. sometimes the books are in the car, usually not. in fact, a large part of my fungal library is back in the midwest, waitng for me to come and reclaim it.
oh, we also saw some fomes, and what i think was ganoderma oregonense, very cool.
i heard there were boletes at the coast, so im freakin out about a trip, like, right now.
maybe i will eat some for dinner, if my day goes smoothly.
