Perpetuating the 10% of brain usage myth
    #9385652 -

As this (non)topic comes up about 4-6 times per year, I think we need to investigate where this comes from.

There are several possibilities:

1. These posters are actually parrots.

2. These posters are too lazy to do any research.

3. These posters are very gullible.

4. These posters are actual evidence of 10% of brain usage.

You may choose more than one.

Next we shall address the 100th Monkey Myth and the Plants Feel Pain myth...

I think the myth stems from the idea that a large portion of our psychic activity is unconscious.

I pick #4.

It's because people want desperately to believe that there are magical psychic parts of the brain lying dormant, just waiting for someone oh so special to discover them.  It's a comforting fairy tale.

2 and 3

I used to spread this myth around.

Imagine if consciousness as we are currently experiencing it really was the result of the brain using only 10% of its power, and then suddenly God flipped a switch and cranked it up to 100%.  That would be fucking awesome.

When somebody says that to me, I ask them what 90% of their brain could be removed?  Then they usually give me a blank stare...

Its 2 and 3 of course, maybe a hint of 1.

(edit - I dont think Ive heard the 100th monkey myth...)

There are numerous hypothetical scenarios that would be totally cool if they happened. As they aren't/don't, I believe we need a more powerful God; perhaps one that uses 100% of his omnipotence.

I think it's ignorance . I had believed there was mysterious part of the brain that was unknown to us until I was corrected; I hadn't done any research because I wasn't that enthused. There will be 5-6 people a year who will not know this isn't true.

Generally, I hold back my brilliance (only use 30% of my writing acumen) so as not to make others feel inadequate.

I believe it without proof, not an exact number, but I have had a few near death experiences (alot) and have gotten into alot of fights with people I was terrified of and I will say this.

When my adrenaline starts flowing in large qauntities everything slows down (my brain starts working faster) like in slow motion I make decisions that would otherwise take at least 10 times as long in fractions of a second. Thats proof enough for me.

Even if you have not had such experiences, you have consumed psychedelics, and doesnt time slow down when your tripping real hard as well?

Or so it appears. The speed of neuronal signalling remains fairly fixed.

Ok well more neurons are firing at once.

Neuroscientist.:D

I dont care what terms you use to describe it if my mind can function at a rate over ten fold normal I would say that this "myth" has some truth to it.

I hate this myth. However, awesomebastard proposes a believable interpretation of it:

that usually, we use only 10% of our potential processing power.

and this makes sense considering that the full 100% would only need to be activated in times of extreme stress or imminent danger/surprise (eg adrenal rush, or sensations in a trip)

but even so.. i dont think teh 10% brain usage myth can be traced back to its origin anymore. it must have come from somewhere.. some sort of misinterpreted scientific report.. im pretty sure we use all of our brain each day.. but its possible we can be using it much faster or all encompassingly

close enough to true
but also
if more than 10% is active at any moment
we get spasdic and fall over unconscious.
