It's a shame that many individuals lose sight of one of many very valuable lessons which exemplify a very essential key to enlightenment, amidst their emotional reactions to having their beliefs subject to dissection and question.

From my perspective the problem truly lies within the fact that many people identify themselves with their thinking. When one identifies themselves with their thinking, they all too easily become angry when their beliefs are threatened, as if they were having some part of their body under attack.
When the profound realization emerges that we can 'seperate' ourselves from our thinking, a higher level of consciousness is discovered.

If those who have beliefs that are easily prone to logical and rational dissection as many in this forum are, would rise above their programmed emotional response and realize that they are not being personally discriminated, but rather their thinking and NOT them, they emerge stronger, wiser and more enlightened.

Compare this route taken to those who take the route of blind, programmed defensiveness and emotionally personal attacks to protect their 'precious' beliefs [again, as if their beliefs were actually THEM, because they IDENTIFY themselves with their THINKING] and ego from being picked apart.

The truly enlightened [and real] you is one without the noise of incessant thinking.. in other words -- one with no-mind.
Identification with your mind and thinking, which causes thought to be compulsive, is the greatest obstacle to experiencing the reality of a higher enlightenment...

Thank you Swami, for helping me realize this amongst many other things.

I don't think it is so much their "precious" beliefs that people are protecting. I remember a time when I was defensive of my beliefs, until I was able to extricate myself from them and see me as separate from my beliefs.

I think it's this: If I believe something, and someone appears to attack the belief, I may appear to be foolish for having held the belief. I think it's more of an ego thing than defending the belief.

It can be very difficult to put one's ego aside and say, "Hmm, yes, I could be wrong." Of course, how one's beliefs are analyzed can ensure a defensive response will be forthcoming.
