Philosophy of drug use
    #9358753 -

Vices, yes drug use is a vice.  But we should be free, if we are free at all, to be able to choose and enjoy our vices as a freedom.  You are free to tell a secret and free to keep it.  Freedom and vice.

People say that drug user just want to escape reality because they can't deal with it. To them i say "is it any wonder?". I think most of the time they can't deal with reality anyway, it's just they can't deal with drugs either. Instead they take their reality breaks in different ways. Not as effective though IMO.

Drug use is not necessarily a vice.

It definitely depends what kind of "drug" you're talking about, and how you define the word "vice."

If you take "vice" to mean an act which is degrading to the individual, then most drug use is indeed a vice.  Opiates, cigarettes, methamphetamine, unhealthy food, refined sugar, and so forth, are all vices, even if used infrequently, because they are unnecessary and degrading to the human organism.

Psychedelics, on the other hand, have no harmful physiological effects in regular doses.  They could still have degrading psychological effects or indirectly bring about physiological degradation if they were used excessively at the expense of a healthy lifestyle...then they would be a vice.  Otherwise they are not.

If you're talking about vice in terms of morality...Well, then I would be in way over my head.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

No one ever tell you to mix and match?

Psychedelics can certaintly have bad psychological effects if used frequently or irresponibly. The drugs listed there have no ill effects with responsible use.

Vice depending on how and why the drugs are used...

Using Mushrooms as a sacrament to attain spiritual consciousness is far from vice.

There's nothing "wrong" with anything one does to themselves.

I agree with this statement as a basis of liberty. Of course it would have to be followed by a particular explanation, if it is to have any effect.

The opinion that drug use is a vice is of course valid; it is backed up by a monumental amount of evidence. I think the path to a more sensible society is to indulge these opinions rather than reject them. But then ask specific questions as to what they are referring to.

Where and how is this line drawn? By spreading the awareness of an entire spectrum of plants, herbs, and substances, with varying strengths and characters of effects; and by demanding a rational basis of policy, we should be able to easily prove the absurdity of the lines that define what is acceptable and unacceptable.

In my opinion, we should acknowledge many of these "interpretations" of the anti-drug lobbies, and reduce them to absurdity through an understanding of rationality, (which is more particularly understanding its limitations).

The chief tool used by this machine, is a manipulation of "Fact vs. Myth".

"Fact vs. Myth" should be familiar to anyone who peruses the forums at the shroomery.

Drugs aren't an escape from reality, more like a fuzzy blanket and pillow for the better enjoyment of reality.

The opinion that drug use is a vice is of course valid;

As a definitive statement it is not valid.

Right, I should have to really expand what I meant by this, even though I am sure you already know what I meant.

Isn't it strange that both the anti-drug and the pro-drug lobby's basic argument is expressed in the very same terms, this "fact vs myth?"

I mean, sure, this is a basic philosophical question; look at the way this community conducts itself. Most often there is a partisan split between fact and myth, and here it is called the philosophy and mysticism forums.

I think the problem is, that the pro-drug and anti-drug lobbies have different standards to base facts in. Our facts are recieved in a nihilistic frame, thus disputed, and theirs are accepted in a "practical" (hence the stoner idealist) frame.

There is no denying that the anti-drug states there own in a rational manner. Truly, they assert a given fact about marijuana, that is sensible as:

2+3=5.

There is no denying this, but there is clearly some bias in what is being expressed. As we understand it, there is clearly variability to the statement. We understand that although they are presenting a mathematical certainty, in all their "practical" terms they are presenting a biased statement. We know that as it relates to the argument, or as it establishes a morality, all they are actually saying is

A+B=C

(we nihilate this)

The thing is, when we assert our own facts, we are playing the same game, no matter how much more reasonable we may be. It is my opinion, that we should simply take an iconoclastic approach, a declaration that their established reality is variable (mythical, symbolic, perceived, etc) rather than reasserting our own facts.

If they are going to nihilate our facts, we should nihilate ALL facts.

It is impossible to actually prove a substantial fact, although you can rationally make a very good "case" of it. The biggest problem, I think, is many people believe that justice is a rational process; that there is actually a factual reality that is in balance with the mythical.

Rationality does not establish positive facts, it demonstrates what is not the case. Every "thing" physical or metaphysical, is actually conceived as a negation; a limitation or a tension within our environment. It is simple as understanding that an object taking up space, is in your way, exerting pressure upon your being.

The only "Facts" are nothingness, and its consequent freedom. This is a freedom from fact vs myth, or rather, all is myth. This is why I agree with the OP's statement. We should stop stating "facts" and "definitive statements" other than freedom and nothingness.
