Keep us posted on these control jars, I used to always wonder what would happen if i added dextrose to the substrate before sterilizing it. I would love to know ! That's exactly what I did. All of the additives were added before sterilization. Also I'm not using rice, I use Rye Grain. The amounts used are 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of malt, in the malt/honey I used a 50/50 mixture (1.5 teaspoons of each).

I did something like that, the damn honey protected the grain from being colonized or something like that. It sat in my incubator for weeks, no signs of growth, I couldn't even get contaminants to grow on it. But maybe if you cook the rice with the solution like Nacho was saying, it probably stand a better chance. Anyway, just my two cents.

well, here are my results, they may be influenced by unseen factors: Honey- no germination, some success in LOW amounts, not worth it. Sugar, brown (what I had)- germination, fast colonization, complete contamination by bacillis.. not worth it! but.. a 1 pt jar in less than a week is impressive.. but still, complete contam. soy flour- success! very fast and healthy myc.. Dinomite! both a a replacement for BRF and in conjunction with. slightly less water sometimes as it is fattier and therefore somewhat less absorbant. black natural wild rice- must be partialy precooked/soaked, used the drained water instead of spring water, but it had been boiled.. some vermiculite and brf, but not much at all.. mostly wild rice, just eyeballed it.. success! very fast colonization, healthy appearance! Dinomite? Dinomyc! yeah.. so.. good luck with your maad science

Hiya Sutec, I have never seen better example on The Shroomery of what additives testing experiments should be like. Just great job. Keep us informed about results. john

Just a small update:My heating system (as primitive as it was) has gone kablooey So my jars have been subjected to some pretty darned low temperatures for the past couple of days. I'm hoping that contamination doesn't get a foot hold, I'll be fixing it tonight though with a replacement I just procured today. It's a pitty too because I was starting to see some growth in a couple of the batches (The control and malt jars...). Now however with the temps at night reaching into the upper 50s in my house, I'm not too optimistic. We'll see once I get the heat back up to more optimal measures. Hopefully things will just start off where they left off and no nasty contaminants got and bad ideas... Will update as the situation progresses.
