So, fruitflies...

How come they always appear when there is fruit going bad?  Yet they are never around any other time...:strokebeard:

I forgot about a banana peel in my waste basket at home.  Days later, there was a cloud of fruitflies in there.  How did they know it was there?  Word of mouth, in the bug community?  Where did they come from?  Do they wander in and out of homes with great stealth, only to get out and party flamboyantly when they happen to encounter some fruit?  Are they psychic?

I've never seen a fruitfly where there was no fruit.  Yet I never see them migrating from one place to another.  I know they're small, but they are plentiful and unmistakable; surely in my 27 years I would have run into one or two of them, searching fruitlessly.

Now here in my office, they have materialized, again with a neglected banana peel in the wastebasket. 

Help me understand.

Maybe their larvae are introduced to the fruit before it even ends up in your grocery store and are just waiting to emerge?

I had a terrible fruitfly problem about a few days ago.  It was disgusting.  They first showed up when I had a few peaches that went bad, and they're still around, although the cloud is thinning.

i always have a fruitfly problem because i leave scraps out on a layer of paper towels to be taken out to the compost pile...it usually goes out every 2-4 days depending on how quickly things pile up or how bad they reek

We used to have tiny gnat things show up in our unclean bathroom when I lived at college... They seemed to appear when the humidity was high and they would hang out on wet towels.

No one ever saw them come in or go out, and we would go in with hair spray and lighters once in awhile to wage warfare...

Fun times living in the filth!
