I had to do a whole project for cultivating fruit flies in high school.....I mean....It wasn't the WORST thing I've ever done.....but it wasn't my favorite
I look at their cuteness in the distance and have already decided I do not want to get one....saw the website...didn't order one... I think i'm allowed to think they're cute..I mean...they are!

i have a roach farm and a cricket farm in a room in my basement..
also i have a dew worm bed in an old fridge in the back shed that i started composting in before i turned it into a full on worm bed, for fishing and feeding my beardys when they were fully mature and able to eat them..
so i have that covered..
as i said before i'm no freshman in herpetological caregiving

i feel you.
if i thought there was any real danger being posed to it, i wouldnt have done it.
but they did call and let me know that there are only certain days they will ship and thats all weather dependant.
as i said before though, its the state of the USPS that i'm worried about, what with lost packages, opened and taped envelopes and crushed seeds..
i dont want a crushed chameleon or the dude that hands me the package and i will go a couple rounds..

I had a Horned Lizard as a kid! Dude was bad ass. I was only able to keep it alive for 6 months though... because I couldn't find any ants in the winter time and ants are the only thing they eat. I gotta admit though, I got damn sick of catching that thing ants because Georgia had mostly fire ants. I got so many fire ant bites that summer while catching that thing food.
And I'm with ya on the Thorny Devils, I've wanted one ever since I first saw them. I don't think they're available in the pet trade though. They're another obligate ant eater so it would be foolish to get one.
Was there any reason you didn't want to purchase your own fire ant colony?

i was always curious how people get those fruitflys into the cage with the lizard and how they keep them in there, does your cage have a screen ontop or is it all glass with a glass door or something?
once that fruitfly culture runs out what u could do is find a plant that holds up to alot of water in there with him then the fruitflys will plant larve in the soil, soppose u could just build a little ledge to hold a peech or something to
have you found out if he drinks water from a bowl or waterfall yet? back when i had a bearded dragon we had this cool little rockface that dripped water from the top down to multiple pools was pretty neat

Most people breed "wingless" fruit flies to feed small reptiles and amphibians. I say "wingless" because they technically do have wings but they are all mutated and they can't fly. As far as keeping the culture alive, just safe a few of them and give them some mushed up bonanners and the adults eat them and breed and lay eggs in the bonanners and the cycle starts over.
Edit: Toadcastle, parents wouldn't let me keep an ant colony in the house, they already had ant problems and were afraid the colony would break free and carry away all the food in the house while we were sleeping.

i lined the bottom with some slightly hydrated coir, and the fruitflies are wingless so i just opened the jar and tapped a few in.. i noticed last night though he's a night eater. the flies crawled on him all day, checked up on him last night and he was hunting them in the coir.
i've been trying differnt things to see how he likes water and so far if i drip some onto the leaves and let it drip down and pool naturally he loves that, and a good mist everynow and then.
for being a new reptile he's very well finger trained.. i hold out my finger and he climbs up..
shared our first smoke session last night.. he chilled and turned dark grey on my shoulder.

Yay! He's alive and well!! You should take a picture with him on your hand for size comparison!
Also....any names coming to mind now that you're getting to know him?
