naked lunch and lsd

I just finished reading Naked Lunch by William Burroughs.It was a great (if bizarre) book.In the preface and appendix he talks about different types of drugs and his experience with them. He mentions "LSD-6" and he also states "they are up to LSD-25". What the hell is Burroughs talking about? I though the 25 in LSD-25 got its name because it was the 25th drug to be synthesized from ergot alkoloids by Albert Hoffman, thus there couldn't be a drug "LSD-6" . Please keep in mind this book was written in the 50's.

I'm not a chemist or anything, but I'm pretty sure that LSD-25 is the 25th LSD complex (or whatever you'd call it) that Dr. Hoffman made, and in order to get to number 25 he had to have made 24 other LSD complex's before that one, thus there would have been an LSD-6. They would all be similair chemicals, but just arranged deffirently. Just my thoughts, could be wrong.

ive never read the book but when i was about 7 or 8 i saw the movie and it scared the shit outta me...but now its just funny...

Sick Of it All is right. Hofmann synthesized the drug originally as part of a series of derivatives of a grain mold, ergot. These substances were being ivnestigated for possible use in obstetrics as well as other medical applications. When uninteresting results were produced by animal tests with LSD-25 -- the twenty-fifth in this series of compounds to be created -- research was abandoned.

Five years later, however, Hofmann was inexplicably driven by what he called a "peculiar presentiment" to make LSD-25 again.

Since Hofmann was a professional chemist, he always followed strict protocols and extreme caution. Somehow though when he made LSD for the second time it got into his system, he later speculated it was absorbed through his finger tips.
