What Has Meditation Done For You?
    #8131348 -

I've sort of been wanting to start meditating on a regular basis lately, and am curious to hear some first hand experiences from people who do this.

I know meditation can be good for improving concentration and reducing stress, but I'm sure the benefits must go beyond that.

What has meditation done for you?

Check out the above link. It's a great e-book on Vipassana meditation. I've been meditating almost daily for about a month now and while it's quite challenging I have noticed some very subtle benefits to my mood and outlook. I am quite inexperienced but I find it totally worth it. Maybe some more advanced meditators could chime in with long-term results?...

It has taught me that I am thinking almost all the time, and that most thinking is compulsive and destructive. It has taught me (and reminds me) that I am not my thoughts. It reminds me that most of the time when I view something I am mostly viewing my thoughts and preconceptions about that thing, and not the thing itself.

It has helped me to be less reactive, and has consequently diminished the power external circumstances have over me and my direction in life.

It helps me to remember to do one thing at a time, to live in the present as much as possible.  It reminds me that I don't know anywhere near as much as I sometimes think, and how liberating it is to know that.  It reminds me to assume less, and question more.

It has allowed me to witness many more poignant moments than I would have been able to if I had been wrapped up in my thinking at the time.

Meditation also serves as a gauge for how 'off-track' I've gotten.  If I haven't practiced meditation in a while, it is a sure sign I'm completely wrapped up in my mind and probably have been for a while.  As I identify what triggered each lapse, I can piece together how my mind works; what parts of life I am not prepared to deal with.  In that sense it has helped me to understand myself better; it makes clear what I am afraid of and what I desire.

I could go on.

Obviously I am far from enlightened (just look at some of my posts haha) but it is undeniable that I have progressed towards peace and understanding since I discovered meditation, and I cannot imagine who I would be if I had never discovered it.

How long have you been practicing meditation?

Try to experience meditation, for what it is. The benefits, will differ from everyone to all.

When the question comes to ask what it has done, you build expectations and forgo it as a unique relation to what it is potentially, but rather what to expect.

Peace with you.

The mind is a creative tool. It searches to protect you, through message sensations(feelings). It is no different than a computer, you need to make sure its anti-virus program is in check and that it doesnt have a script that limits your experience, because of to much precaution.

And remember the computer does not appear to respond to words of anger and frustration - just give it input, in the form of new meanings that you know to be true and its messages to you and the limits it lays out for you, will change.

Guilt is an outcome of believing you are the cause of the problems.

Yet, we are not a cause to something, we see is negative or bad - Unless you believe your intentions are directed towards a bad outcome....

a lot, i couldn't explain it all. It's taken me backwards the more i do it. Meaning i feel layers peel off, and the happyness of times way before the age i'm at now. I couldn't describe it any better than that. More clear, less stuff.

On top of all of the benefits that everyone has already posted, I've noticed that I've taken leaps and bounds intellectually. I comprehend things faster, retain more information, can spit it back out easier, etc. As Imachavel said "More clear, less stuff".

So I layed down in the bath tub a little while ago and tried to meditate. Usually I get bored quickly and move on to something else but this time I forced myself to go through with it.

I ended up in a very relaxed state for about half an hour, and I feel way better than I did beforehand. My mind doesn't feel all racy and crazy right now...it's nice! I'll definitely be meditating again tomorrow.

I need to start focusing on my meditation. I started doing it before I was at uni but I somehow slowly stopped. I'll be starting again soon as this thread is very encouraging.
