Two Red Pandas Killed at Nuremberg Zoo

Two red pandas have been found dead in their enclosure at Nuremberg Zoo, home to polar bear cub Snowflake. The animals' stomachs had been slit open with a sharp object. The city has called in police to investigate.


The dead red pandas were found on Monday.
Tragedy has struck Nuremberg Zoo for the second time in as many months. Two red pandas, a male and a female, have been found dead with their bellies slit open by a sharp instrument, officials in the southern German city reported Wednesday. The police have been brought in to investigate the gruesome incident.

The city said the red pandas, which are slightly larger than domestic cats, were found dead in their enclosure on Monday. "Both animals had their abdominal walls opened," the mayor's office said in a statement issued Wednesday. "The injuries to the two pandas are virtually identical and an examination by the Federal Office for Health and Food Safety found that they weren't caused by knife cuts but probably by a sharp instrument."

The pandas shared their enclosure with three muntjac deer which have sharp teeth, However the deer have been ruled out as culprits because they have been living with the bears for a decade and got on well with them, the mayor's office said. "They regularly visited each other in their stables," the statement said.

"Because the cause of the incident is unclear, the Nuremberg police have been asked to help with the investigation," the statement continued. "They have started their enquiries and the state prosecutor's office has been informed."

I am not really upset, I don't agree with the idea.
I would feel the same disapproval even if a really ugly dog was in a similar situation. :lol:
Maybe in this case I feel a little more sadness as it is something that directly concerns me. :heart:

Yes. Senseless violence is reprehensible. For one thing, these are endangered animals. It might be different if it was done for some practical purpose (food, shelter), but even then, the perpetrator has no rightful claim to the lives of these specific animals.

Municipal officials concluded that, since they could find no evidence, it was the deer, but a deer killing two red pandas, with their teeth, in such a manner is impossible, even if their temperament had allowed for such an act.

Curious post. Is it being implied that all other responders have not been honest? Please elaborate as to how you've concluded that his response was honest, because it certainly couldn't be limited to the manner in which he responded.

It's interesting to note that one casualty of commercial tuna fishing is dead dolphins that get caught in the nets used to catch tuna. People get very upset about this and there is even a campaign to "Save the Dolphin" while many other coincidentally less-cute species hurt by industry are ignored.

As it happens, dolphins are a very successful species at the top of the food chain and don't particularly need protection aside from the humanitarian aspects of unnecessarily killing them. They aren't endangered, not by a long shot.
