Mormonism and the inverted pentagram

"The pentagram with one point upwards repels evil, but a reversed pentagram, with two points upwards, is a symbol of the Devil and attracts sinister forces because it is upside down and because it stands for the number 2. It represents the great Goat of the witches' sabbath and the two upward points are the Goat's horn." (The Black Arts, Richard Cavendish (G.P.Putnam's Sons Publishing; 1967, p.265).
"The spiritual knowledge of the Five-pointed Star is identical with its practical application. Let us beware that the figure is always well drawn, leaving no open space, through which the enemy can enter and disturb the harmony existing in the Pentagon. Let us keep the figure always upright, with the topmost triangle pointing to heaven, for it is the seat of Wisdom, and if the figure is reversed perversion and evil will be the result" (Magic - White and Black, Franz Hartmann, M.D., Newcastle Publishing, 1971,pp.290-291).
"Inverted Pentacle. The sacred symbol of Witchcraft often is misunderstood because of associations of the inverted pentacle, with single point down and double points up, with the infernal. If an upright five-pointed star represents God or the deity, then the reverse typically represents Satan...In Europe, some Witches have used the inverted pentacle to denote the second-degree rank. This use has declined, because of the association of the symbol with Satanism" (The Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft, by Rosemary Ellen Guiley, Facts on File, Inc., 1989, p.266)

This kind of superstition puts the "primitive" folk to shame.

High ranking occultists often start their own fraudulent religions for the sole purpose of extracting the monetary and emotional energies of their followers.
The most successful of these have been L.R. Hubbard and Joseph Smith.
The up and down pentagrams are more about give and take than good and evil...

In some occult circles the inverted pentagram is said to draw energy in and the upright projects it out.

Like the cup and the athame? Pretty basic phallic/vaginal symbology.

On the surface it is all about the "rose" and "cross" but all symbols have many layers of subtle significance depending upon the context in which they're used.

It seems to me that the symbols which we (humans) have invested with the most power all relate back to our sexuality. The power to create life, inspire ecstasy, connect two as one...we're impressed!

Would you agree that people do the same depending on their personality??

Just acting out the biological imperative. (using symbols)

So true, the unification of opposites is what it's all about on every level...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eliphas_Levi
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagram
I'm wondering if Brigham Young, who lived contemporaneously with Eliphas Levi, was influenced at all by Levi. I'm also wondering about a dark Gnostic element based upon this symbol which was adopted by Anton Szandor LeVey for his Chrurch of Satan:
Here, a name of the Gnostic Demiurge, (sometimes identified as YHVH over and against the Christian 'God the Father' - a benevolent Deity), Samael ['The Blind God'] and Lilith, the first wife of Adam (who refused to be 'on the bottom' and flew off from Adam to consort with demons. Orthodox Jews still make talismans to prevent Lilith from sucking the life from newborn babies, as she is vampyric in legend). Nevertheless, this is symbol represents a demonic union of the Demiurge and His first female creation, Lilith.
At any rate, the only Mormon I've known was a bright but paranoid schizophrenic student who comingled his beliefs with his delusions, and shared an old Mormon prejudice against Blacks. Mormon belief has certain Gnostic elements including the wive's of God, which parallels 'celestial wives' of human men. In either case, marriage and sexuality exist in Heaven. There are complexities in Mormonism that make Gnostic myths seem simple by comparison and since there is a dark side to certain non-Christian Gnostic systems (like Crowley's OTO) I wonder how much occult thought really contributes to Mormonism.
Inasmuch as early Mormons practiced polygamy (52 wives for old Brigham Young!) there seems to be an implicit 'worship' of the Feminine, and Aphrodite-Venus was one of the most well known representative of the sexual aspect of the Feminine. Venus is the 'evening star' and the 'morning star.' Goddess worship became associated with the devil, but the Pagan and later Baphomet symbols are cosmicized sexuality. Sexuality occurs in the Godhead with God and His wive's in Mormon mythos, so in putting this collage together, I'm not surprised as the symbolism on the temple.
