Is this the Age of Anxiety?

When I first joined the Shroomery, granted I wasn't as active as I am now, I sure didn't see as many threads about anxiety as I do right now. Topics about social anxiety, anxiety induced by marijuana and other psychedelics, and a nervousness about living life in general seem to be on the rise (or people are becoming more open about it) and I wonder what is the cause of this? Not only exclusive to this forum, I see it in my family (both grandfather and mother have bipolar disorder), my friends (one of my best friends has BP), my coworkers and definitely myself.
Having had terribly bad social anxiety during middle and high school, I understand the feeling of helplessness that people might experience. I remember thinking to myself "what is going on? i don't need to get all flustered like this" during the times where I would be over-thinking out of my skull. I feel it caused me to hate my experience with school and its social functions. It extends beyond school though. I am fortunately still young, but I see others older than myself feeling worn down because of the stresses of life. No doubt you've heard someone talking about how they wish to do.. or want to do.. this or that, but nothing seems to materialize. Is it fear? Lack of trust in others or themselves? The corporate media machine, instigating fear of war and tribulation as well as feelings of low self-worth to try to get you to buy products obviously can't be helping matters.
If peace and contentment are to describe the world, surely they must first describe the individuals. How are we to step towards this?

No, it's only that now people have the opportunity to express their feelings much easier and fairly without the judgment they all fear and the internet can facilitate communication like no other. I think this is a great sign, accepting, acknowledging one's fears is the first step to healing and reaching mental maturity. Now so long ago, people thought that their anxiety was the devil trying to mess with their lives, so you can only imagine what kind of effect this had on their minds, which were already confused and frightened. Some people still believe such things, but that's an entirely different matter No matter how scary things might seem, it's a positive sign in my opinion. The fact that we have the opportunity to make an exchange of ideas and HAVE INTEREST in doing such a thing had a tremendous potential if we know how to use it right.
Getting back with those with anxiety, I would also like to point out that what really seems to help them is when they see that their problem is not really a problem and that everybody else feels the same, only that some know how to cope with it better than the others. This is a huge example and motivation for those in need.

I'm sure all human beings feel moments of anxiety and pressure. I think it's mostly stress and social pressures, and also the self conscious reflection of oneself. I don't know though, I'm sure people are more open on the inter web since we all have these thoughts.

I believe it really is that simple. But this comes much, much, much more difficult to others. Anxiety, in my opinion, is created by a lack of compassion and love.
It's somewhat odd that you bring this up. I was just recently thinking about the same thing. According to Hinduism and Vedic Astrology, we're in the Kali Yuga, the Age of Kali, which is the age of ignorance and chaos. It's believed that this is because during this age people are the furthest away from God (and not the guy in the sky, God as Brahman, everything, the True self, pure Love) as possible.
We certainly must change ourselves to change the world. To change ourselves, we must realize that our True Self is completely perfect in every aspect. Once we see Love in ourselves, we will see it everywhere. Neem Karoli Baba says it better than me...

See all women as mothers, serve them as your mother. When you see the entire world as the mother, the ego falls away.
