I'm not sure what is growing on my agar

This is my first time growing mushrooms. I got a sporeprint from a friend (pretty old). I scraped some spores into a test tube of distilled water and let them sit for 12 hours. I then put two drops onto each petri dish containing malt extract agar. That was the moring of the 24th. I didn't see any changes until yesteday night - almost the entire plate then had something growing on it like a lawn (true for all my plates they look the same). But I don't see cotton, or strands, or anything that looks like the pictures I've seen. It looks more like the agar itself is growing. same color/texture, but is raised so is definitely something. what's going on? is this my fungus? thanks.

if it isn't white, i would say it's some kind of contamination.

Unless it's snow white and fuzzy looking it's not mushroom mycelium. It could be bacteria. Be careful because some of them can be be dangerous. Make sure you sterilize everything and try again.

But would every one of my plates have the exact same contamination and no fungus whatsoever? I also used the same batch of agar for some oyster mycelium and I have no contamination in my oyster tubes - just healthy white fuzz

sounds like a contam!
that sucks.
you should have white mycellium growth going on with the agr.

I dunno....if your plates are full of sumthin in that short of time it definatly is not mycelium.

So today there is some white fluffy growth that definitely looks like what I want. It is competing with the other weird stuff growing on the plates. Should I plate some of the white stuff on a new plate, or should I buy new spores and try again? I am worried that it might just be white contamination or that it might carry some of the other contamination with it, but I don't want to spend more money than I need to. Thanks to anyone who replies.

If you have healthy growth and contams on the same plate you can save it. You have the right idea, transfer to a new plate. If that one is bad like the last, do it again....
