Peat moss and vermiculite at a 1:1 ratio is a true casing layer as it is non-nutritious and the mycelium won't colonize it but it requires pasteurizing which can be difficult for a new grower to do.
Coir/verm will work well enough for now.
Bods unmodified tubs work well for most people but I personally have a hard time keeping the surface conditions moist when I use them. My RH is around 10%
I prefer Pastys EZ dial monotubs for dry climates

I don't have any peat moss but I have previously sterilized substrate left over in the pressure cooker I put in the fridge. I'll pull it out and let it warm up overnight and put some on top tomorrow morning and keep the RH at 100% in the tub until then. Hope that works...

Well here's today's grow progress. I think this tub is going to be ok. Not too bad for a first attempt if I do say so myself! Thanks again for all the help!

Well I got 1 flush out of it. 37.75 grams dry.
After the first flush, I waited a couple days and noticed white mold took over. I guess I got too confident. Didn't really sterilize the scissors or my hands. Figured the mycelium could handle contams at that point but it makes sense that it had a hard time considering I attacked it with scissors. Lol.
I'm still happy with the success of my first try. Thanks again for everyone who helped me get my feet wet. Going to figure out this AGAR thing and have 4 colonized grain jars I plan to put in a tub this weekend. Going to try the EZ Dial tub design this time and skip the gadgets to see if it fairs any better.
Here's some pics of the tub before during and after harvest. Enjoy.
Decided to take these big guys down the night prior.

The next day it seemed like the rest were ready.

I used little scissors and cut them at the substrate.

A few days later, white fuzzies were all over so I took the block out and threw it in my wood line upside down. Maybe the clean underside will sprout a few outside in the woods.

Are you sure you had white mold? Looks like the mycelium just recovered after harvesting mush, it happens.

Oh shit! lol. Well if it wasn't contaminated before it is now after laying face down in the woods. I guess I just keep on learning new stuff! It did have a different smell to it too so that was what convinced me to get it out of the growing area asap. Smelled a little rotty and the tops of some of the pins had white growing too. Better safe than sorry I figure. And I have enough from the first flush to last me a while.
On a side note, I'm trying to figure out the AGAR thing and ordered everything for the recipe Philly Golden Teacher put on YouTube but I forgot Karo syrup and don't have honey. What does the corn syrup do? Can I skip it? Or should I wait until my next grocery store run next week?
Here's his video:

Corn syrup/ karo / honey are just further nutrients. Generally speaking lme is normally fine without additions.

I saw some stuff from that teacher, and can`t say that i`m impressed. Why don`t you rely in that masses of agar recipes here on the board?

information overload I guess. I read quite a few threads but there are so many recipes and hard to know what is the best one. And it's easier to follow a video I guess. Do you have one you recommend? I have the plastic cups with lids, telephone agar powder, blue food coloring, potato flakes, and a temp gun right now. And I can eat the potato flakes, so I'm not committed to the recipe yet. lol.
I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks again gentlemen!

I use a pretty standard MEA agar recipe, lately I’ve been lowering the sugar content a little to encourage rhizomorphic growth.
This pours 20 plates: 10g Agar 8g LME 500ml H2O
I’ve done a lot of others though and they all work, so I’d recommend using whatever you have on hand right. I used to do a lot of PDYA and then I was doing 10g agar in 500ml of the water I soaked my oats in when I made grain.

Have a look at Frank's agar media journal, you`ll get the idea.

its true that you dont need all that stuff, but you already have it, and you clearly like to tinker, so fuck it. its a hobby afterall...have fun. try some simpler teks, and stick with whatever you prefer.
if you do go with the autotub: ive found fans to be a complete hinderance. they dry the air abruptly which kicks on the humidifier prematurely. if there was no humidifier, the rh% would gradually rise back to its original position, but instead the box is flooded with fog before that has a chance to happen. over time this extra moisture builds up and can fuck with your surface.
i removed my fan and just let FAE happen passively by poking some holes. it works like a charm now. also instead of one big cake i do little shoeboxes that i swap in and out as needed, and i like that a lot better to. to each his own. have fun!

I want to say THANK YOU again to all of you who helped me on my first attempt!
I decided to start a journal. If you want to see how I'm doing on my second grow and future ones, it seems like a more appropriate place. You can check it out here:

Happy growing!
