Anyone tried EarthGro manure?
    #777735 - 07/26/02 07:17 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Has anyone tried this brand yet? It is made by Scott's and I cant find the 3 in 1. It says it is made of manure and compost...no additives. I bought 1.5 cubic ft. for $1.04 at K mart today so I wanna give it a shot, and I am just curious how high of hopes I should have. Any comments welcome, and heres a link to the product

I'm sure it will work just as good as the others if used properly...

My friend is in the process of trying it out..........when she pasturized it with some straw it kinda just made mud covered straw(actually blended and coated quiet nicely).....so we'll see soon enough how well it works...........

Thanks! I am glad to hear it worked. Did you get your normal yield without any reduced growth or anything? I plan to use it with chopped straw so it should work fine then. Hell Yea!!!! I am so happy now.

Yeild was decent lets say fictisously 3 dried onces for 2 turkey roaster pans of compost spawn together in a tub like dung brothers compost
Also make sure to add vermiculite and peat moss to your compost as it will lighten it up so it gets fully colonized!
I'll post a recipe in a second!

Alright this is gonna take me awhile to type
Recipe:
1.("black gold" Worm casings)
2.Wheat straw( You chop the wheat straw up and put in a ziplock freezer back and fill with water distilled water and let it sit for an hour or two)
3.peatmoss
4.vermiculite
5.Alder shavings
You mix em all together in a large bowl And bake em in a aliminium turkey roaster pan you buy at the store the larger the better. Bake for 1hour at 250-275F then after an hour stir it up and bake for an additional 30minutes.
No youv've sterilized your compost.
As for the exact ingrediant ratio its up to you.
Use about50-60% worm casings as much or little straw as you like use about half a bag per pan more or less
use about a cup or two of vermiculite, Use a decent amount of peat moss two to three times as much verm. Maybe less And use a good amount of alder shavings I believe they contribute alot to mush size. Dont us to much though you add the alder chips dry. Add water to your mixture distilled water till damp or moist not soaking.
You'll have to add more water to your compost after you sterilize distilled of coarse.
Don't get your compost too wet or it may not work appropiatly.
I thinks thats about it.

Thanks, that sounds pretty good, but wouldnt it be better to just pasteurize the manure and straw, that would probably increase yields. And verm shouldnt be necessary because if i did 50/50 or 75/25 straw to compost wouldnt that keep the compost loose enough to promote growth?
I am just asking cuz I am new to this and curious. Any outside opinions are much appreciated.

I ordered mine off the web, but you can look at feed stores, they usually arent to far from the city. or you can try the pellets, which i havent tried yet, apparently they are available at almost all pet stores.

Pet stores have hay for rabbits. Craft shops have straw for making handicrafts. Some garden centres have straw. I ended up using rabbit blocks made of Alfalfa and Timothy's Hay. It is all shredded up fine and when you soak it, it all swells up and seperates. My experimental mix is:

1/3 composted cattle manurer
1/3 worm castings
1/6 shredded coir
1/6 rabbit pellets expanded.

This makes the most wonderful texture. When you squeeze it, it sticks together, when you mix it, it seperates. I have tested the PH many times and it is consistant at 7.2. I am going to try goosing up some of it with fossilized fruit bat guano tea and other organic fertilizers to see if I can improve it, but for now I am happy with this mix. The smaller particles of the hay seem to be just disappearing into the compost after a week, but not the coir. It remains in strands to lighten up the whole thing and hold moisture. I was worried about the hay contaminating but so far after a week, I see and smell nothing. I stir it several times a day and observe it.

I just hope the mushrooms like it as much as I do. I haven't tried this yet but I think it will be very good. I'm going to try the B+ on it. He eats anything.

If you want to add the worm castings you can add as much as you want because mushrooms grow in just plain worm castings. I decided to make the manurer and the castings equal in volume. I believe that a combination of several diferent things is better. I may add more Alfalfa/Hay as the smaller pieces have just turned black and disappeared into the compost. Unfortunatly that is the most expensive part of the mix. When you figure out the cost of these homemade composts they are very inexpensive. A bit of extra money for the hay won't hurt. Mine is about two weeks old now and looks ready. I have a couple of B+ jars getting colonized now and will soon know how it works. I'm thinking about adding a bit of the Aspen shavings into the mix as well because someone used the Alder shavings with success. It's too late for this batch but I'll put some into the next batch. My woodeaters really like the Aspen.

2 pints or 4 half pints colonized pf style substrate.
Per turkey roaster pan is a good way to go

just wanted to add that I just attempted a mixture of 3 parts earthgro to 5 parts zoodoo, + verm and coir. pasteurized at about 170-180 for just a little over an hour. spawned one tray with PF about 2 pints of colonized PF cakes. and another tray with about 1.5 pints of colonized WBS. The PF tray has contammed with trich. I'm just waiting for the other tray to do the same any day now.

I'll add that the PF tray only contammed at the spots where the broken up cake was showing at the surface of the compost.

Also, since my oven doesn't go below 250*F (lowest setting), i had to crack the oven door open a bit. but when the door was open, it would drop the temp down to below 170* inside the oven. But, since the trich was only growing on the exposed cake pieces, I don't think the contam was a result of poor pasteurization.

So what would you guys suggest I do next time?

Should I cover the entire surface of the compost with additional crumbled pf cakes? In theory, this should allow the myc to colonize the surface of the substrate, and ward off contams.

Or should I just cover up the exposed PF pieces with compost?

from what i've heard, other zoo's sell it as well.
I think it's kind of become a generic term for them.
