Okay, I got the bag of compost and the bag of composted cow manure from HD. Now, this compost seems to have alot of wood waste, I'd say about fifty percent. Now should I screen all of this wood waste out. To me it would seem that It would get to compact that way. Also, since this compost does not contain any cow poop I am planning on blending the composted cow manure with the compost. Or do you think I should just add a bit of composted cow manure to my crumbled cakes when I case to get an extra bit of nutrition in there and leave out the other compost?

i had a dream once about mushrooms growing from a bag of miracle grow soil....more in a sec...

i haven't posted here in years...really since my last *intense* mushroom dream back in '97. haven't needed too since that dream remained locked in my freezer till a few months ago when it finally ran dry. so...

this dream of growing mushrooms using pf occured once again, of course out of need it seemed. everything was perfect, fast and furious colonization of the half pints. but no fruits ever did show themselves after the cakes birth. none, even after a month in a sterile chamber. so a wild hair came by and the cakes were all crumpled up and thouroghly mixed with an equal amount of potting soil i just happend to have on hand for my house plants....miracle grow to be exact. almost very wet and *no* sterilization. what was there to loose right? anyhow, within a week it was all white and fuzzy with mycelium and pinheads. and within 2 1/2 there were PLENTY of fruits to pick. no contamination. a true miracle and one that will be savored for many years to come....not to mention the original mix is once again being *re-cased* just to see what happens.

If it were me, Papa, I would not remove the wood. It should not cause you any problems. You might try adding the manure though.

Okay, thanks Spacefarmer. I guess I am going to to mix about 1 part compost with 1 part composted manure and mix this with pf cakes, and layer this on top of a layer of moist vermiculite. After the spawn run, I will then case with 50/50. I'll let ya'll know how this turns out. I guess now I need to get around to pasteurizing.

Okay, found some much better compost. Now how should I pasteurize if I'm going to do it in the oven. what temp and how long?

And yes I do know according to the TMC it should maintain a temperature of 160 degrees for at least two hours.

I prefer to pasteurize in a large pot instead of the oven. Put the compost into an old, but clean, pillow case and immerse in 140-170' water for 1-2 hours. Take the pillowcase into the tub and step on it until no more water comes out. Let it cool, and your good to go. I think it was Ripper who posted a tek for pasteurizing using a large cooler, but if you aren't doing very large amounts of compost, the pot is probably easier.

Okay, now the question is Should I compress the compost?

You will compress it some to get the water out, but when you fill it into your fruiting container, you want it to be kind of light. You can smooth the surface and pack it a little, but you don't want to compress it too much.

dyhydrated cow manure works better than composted manure but it is more expensive so if your on a budget get the composted.
Just my 2 cents

The compost I got from the garden center is working great!
