Hi Home made compost is always better but for some folks it's not always possible to get. I use to get my compost from Home Depot. It's not bad, but you might want to check the Ph level and sift it too. There are lots of stick, twigs and other little goodies that don't get shredded up for some reason?

If you are going to Home Depot, check for Permagreen brand Mushroom Blend Compost. I have heard warnings from several people in the know that commercial composts leave something to be desired, but this brand is 100% organic made from composted horse and poulty manures, cottonseeds, and wheat straw. It says that it is the same formulation as used by many commercial mushroom growers, and does sound much like the compost recipe Stamets outlines in The Mushroom Cultivator. My experiments with it are far from complete, but I inoculated 5 pateurized quarts of this mix 4 days ago with a quart of spawn grown out on rye grain, and it is now 30%-50% colonized. It is looking like a success so far without all the hassle of composting yourself. It might be cheaper to make your own compost if you are producing large scale crops, but at $2 per bag, it is definitely worth the money. ------------------ When the going gets weird, the weird get wired.

It works great. What I've done it break up the cakes onto a mound of the dung/mulch. Make sure it's organic though. I get Earths Finest. The cakes will overtake the mound very quickly. It will look like a cloud of shrooms when it fruits. very nice indeed. good luck

hi, I bought a bag a while back and used as casing(composted manure) I made the mistake of listening to someones post and didnt cook it. make sure you do cook it well.i got lots of cobweb mold and tossed them. also what lana says about sticks and crap is true.theres lots of them.get a screen to sift the dirt. My friends next experiment will be with some composted sheep manure and hay. he's getting it from a farm. Is sheep crap as good as horse/cow?------------------ I'm so happy, cause today I found my friends who're in my head. -Cobain

Hey dino,I just bought a bag of organic manure/compost yesterday. I crumbled my cakes and added some distilled water until the mixture was wet but not soaked. I looked at the the bag and I couldn't see where anything else was added ie: fungacide, fetilizer. I noticed little clumps of cow shit in the mixture which made me happy because I want to see my little buddies grow up in an environment that they would be comfortable in. I think that it should work. As long as the temperature and humidity levels are maintained. I wouldn't worry about trying to sterilize the shit mix because if you think of cow shit, it is full of bacteria and other critters but the shrooms continue to grow. Hopefully I should see some of my buddies after I case the innoculated miture in a week. I am going to try a vermicute/ peat moss casin.Good luck and may the gods be with you!

Generally mushroom compost that you get from the stores has already been colonized once by mushrooms. The resulting material is compost. I dont know if anyone else does this, but through all you old spent cakes and casings into your garden. It will work wonders

Most of the ones that are already used don't state it on the bag. This compost works great for loosening up garden soil, but its no good for mushrooms. Look for a brand that actually says that it has not been used to grow mushrooms. I know I sound like a cheerleader by now, but the Home Depot around here carries a brand called Permagreen. It's 100% organic, and says that, unlike other brands, it has never been used to grow mushrooms.------------------ "It never got weird enough for me."
