Is this a joke? cheat sheet on midterm

So I have a physics exam in the AM. We get to have a 'cheat sheet.' A full size paper with anything we want written on front and back. And since I have the solutions to all the problems in the book(even even problems) I am going to write every assigned hw problem fully. I will fit it, its only 3 chapters for this midterm.
I better get at least an 80/100 to counteract my 37 on my last midterm.
I already had a paper due, chem exam, and math exam all today. I cannot wait until the weekend. Or tommorow night rather.

nothing terrible. A response paper for history on "The narritive of Frederick Douglass" that one slave dude who learned to read and write then escaped and became a big time abolitionist and wrote an autobiography. It was only like 3.5 pages. But still it cut into my calc and chem study time. which sucked.

are you allowed to listen to ipods when you take your tests?
just make an MP3 of the answers
Man, I wish we had iPods when I was in school.
I remember I had a Rio MP3 player. It cost $200 and it only had like 128mb memory. I got it in 1998. Everyone made fun of me and only the nerds knew what an MP3 was.

cheat sheets are awesome - always a happy surprise when my professors let me use them
i usually get a chuckle or two when i hear kids complaining of how bad they did on tests when they didn't take advantage of the cheat sheet option. serves them right

I know that. But if I have examples of a shit load of different type of questions then I will know how to solve questions on the midterm. Similar problems will use similar methods. With this cheat sheet I will have all the different methods written down to utilize.

cheat sheets are common in upper-level classes.
in my international economics class there was so much information he allowed us 2 full front+back cheat sheets on the 2 midterms and 3 full front+back cheat sheets on the final.

I've found tests that allow cheat sheets are especially difficult to compensate for the cheat sheet.

I've got an electric energy systems exam in about an hour, and have made a pretty decent cheat sheet. Hoping to stomp this exam, pack my shit, and go chill in the country for about 10 days.

which makes perfect sense, as "cheat sheets" are available in the real world ( ! ) i've never understood the emphasis on rote memorization; if you utilize something enough you'll probably end up memorizing it anyhow, and if you have no understanding of something, a small formula card or something like this wont help you anyhow. for the maths courses i had in high-school (i.b. higher & further maths) there was a standard formula booklet for the end-of-2-years comprehensive exams, as it would just be stupid to expect people to memorize 2 years worth of formulas, and if you didn't know the material, having a little card with some formulas on it wasn't going to help you anyway

agreed. it also tempts students into a false sense of security. by allowing a cheat sheet, the students study less and create a massive cheat sheet, which renders is useless because if you don't know the material you will spend all your time looking at the cheats instead of answering the exam questions.

When I was in graduate school, for many classes (e.g. cell bio, biochemistry), you could bring in whatever you wanted during exams, excluding communication devices.

Tests with cheat sheets are not made more difficult because the cheat sheets are for classes that have so much CRAP that you NEED a cheat sheet. From there on in, only the dumb kids are fooled, who either didn't study or rely on their cheat sheet to count as their studying.

All my exams are open book, open notes. We get whatever resource we want, except the ability to communicate.
It's because we require so many tables and functions, it would be impractical to print off entire physical property tables/steam tables for every student.

I've had exams where we are given an essay topic well in advance of the exam, then when we get there, we have to write on that topic, also I've had open book political science exams, in which we have to answer questions derived from original texts.
Such things are good for guiding your exam preparation, not a substitute for preparation. On the flip side however, I have known people to write out their essays in advance and then try an committ them to memory and just copy it on the exam. That is missing the point.
