Re: Does philosophy protect you? [Re: Icelander]

philosophy has always protected me during intense psychedelic trips.

as my philosophy progressed it was easier to catagorize experiances, once things are catagorized its easy to put them in a manageable "place"

when i can control my response to perception i feel safe.

I guess we have to slip you a few more hits.

In my experience Philosophy does what Markos said.

I guess there are a lot of things to be protected from, and I wasn't clear on the specifics.

I agree hands down with Markos, that philosophy and psychedelics will lead you into mindsets unacceptable to our society.

I also agree with Icelander, that philosophy can act as a vehicle into vulnerability (to a chaotic sea of possibilities).

Onlynow and truekimbo2 seem to be on the closest page to me. I was wondering if a philosophical map, particularly one that deals with psychedelic states, will help protect someone from becoming lost in a sea of awareness, rendered totally dysfunctional, through chemical (or other) means.

At first thought the answer seems to be yes, philosophy will at least help to sort experience, make sense of it, and integrate it into functional roles. But that brings the question of whether your philosophy will fit your experience. Timothy Leary said he had been to the ends. How did he know the "ends" weren't further out and that he might one day encounter a novel experience that made all his philosophy seem irrelevant?

More simply: does the psych user familiar with archetypes, mind states, and spirituality have a lesser chance of ending up in a mental hospital than someone without such knowledge?

Onlynow's experience seems to say "no", while truekimbo's says "yes".

Veritas says no, reason pending.

thanks for summing it up bradley, thats very much what I'm saying.

icelander, I've been lost in "seas of awareness" as bradley put it many times, thats what gave me the opportunity to test my philosophical beliefs against multi-realities.

hahaha, I'm thinking to myself, pretty much the product of all my tripping is a philosophy of don't move or do things unless i can rationalize a reason for them, if that rationalization wouldn't hold up when I'm not tripping don't do it. and that rule is controlled by the rule of move away from things that don't make me feel good, move towards things that do make me feel good.

edit: in my limited experience the difference between a crazy person who knows philosophy and about archetypes and a crazy person who doesn't is the difference between a functional crazy person and a person who winds up in the hospital.

In my experience, classic Yoga has always kept me together (at higher and higher Centers, I might add) during intense moments in life (trips in particular). For my constitution, it was the 'asanas,' the basic physical (Hatha) postures that best redirect pooling energ in my Navel Center that causes much (interpreted) stomach distress. I have seen someone do The Bow position for two hot seconds, and have his entire trip change for the better.

The fourth rung of Astanga Yoga, 'pranayama,' is what is used to attain to those hyperpranic inner states that include the range of 'samadhis' at the top rung. Pranayama takes one right up through 'pratyahara' (sense withdrawal), 'dharana' (concentration), 'dhyana' (meditation), and finally 'samadhi' (superconsciousness).

[ Note: The first two rungs of 'Yama' and 'Niyama' which are preparatory stages of psychophysical and moral purifications should not be overlooked. Yoga-practicing assh***s should not expect to enter High and Holy 'places.']

Shanti.
