Can you live a life of happiness, without "depressing" it? ...

Go figure?

i don't believe you can begin to even understand the beauty of happiness until you've exprienced hitting rock bottom. otherwise, you take happiness for granted. happiness can exist without depression, but you don't realize the importance or beauty of it until it is gone.

oddly
happiness goes to childhood for me
for when i think of happiness
i think of that magical physical integrity of extreme youth.
- actually i was a crippled kid and was in school with many invalids disabled and afflicted for a few years.

but my ailment healed fast.
sure many of those classmates are still disabled or deceased, nonviable. but lots of us recovered from whatever and grew up.

but what I find amazing,
is that the extreme youth with its gullibility, fast recovery from ailments, the total trusting, the deep satisfaction with cake and candy, a movie, or toys, and the boundless capacity for affection and curiosity, is the very epitomy of happiness for me.

I know that the most happy possible is there, in those attitudes of childhood.
and they are not gone 50 years later, just harder to stage, more awkward to access while fulfilling adult obligations, but they are always lurking around every corner and ready to come out if you let them.

these are not incompatible with adult life.

the issue about depression and locked down mental processing
the chicken and egg between serotonin and habit - nature vs nurture... well, it is a sickness to be sure. there are things from childhood that can heal it, one needs the perspective to access childhood within ourselves.

"Can happiness exist without depression?"

Heaven's yes.

yeah, there is a reason depressed people aren't happy.

sure it can, but..I can't imagine happiness without some kind of opposing emotion; sorrow, anger, etc.

if all there was was happiness, happiness would cease to be, and would instead become..a constantly frolicking frothy hopelessness..[?]

as is the case for everything, it must be balanced by some counterforce.

Well I think I was referring to the dominant feeling which makes the other ones fade.
For instance I feel really really happy  :yesnod:

Of course, there are situations in my life which are annoying, frustrating or consuming, but then I can always choose not to waste my energy on them. And it works, it's all up to what I set my mind to, choosing to remain in that happiness and treat the other problems from that perspective.

How would you even know that you're alive if you had nothing to compare it to? :smirk:

I think I made my point. :smirk: Happiness is a state of being. I think the notion that is being propagated in this thread, that one cannot experience a state of being without having some other kind of experience to contrast it to, is ridiculuous. It is directly evident to one that one experiences this state of being, because one is experiencing it.

Yes, and if these other opportunities did not arise, you'd still feel really really happy.
