i'm not an expert on this, but i agree that it has something to do with the amount of water in the cake. what substrate formula are you using? also, you might be drying your cakes out somewhere along the process, so i might change my techniques a bit and see what happens.

I'm using the standard PFtek substrate, rice flour and vermiculite, +50cc water. Too hard to judge if it happened on the first flush, on account of the squeezing inbetween the jar thing before the birthday. However, on the second/third flushes, I watered exactly as instructed, by spraying the top until water sat, once a day, and bleeding off the excees. This cont'd until new sprouts appeared, then I continued the normal humidification process of spraying 2x a day for app. 5 seconds (vigorous), against the spray sheild.

ugh. i don't like spraying for humidifcation of birthed cakes, it seems kinda easy to mess up. my advice to use perlite. works great. the pf tek gives 2 recipes, i like the "maximum fruiting formula", which is 1/2 cup verm, 1/4 cup BR flour and 1/4 cup water. that works good for me.

Pegasus, i believe that the casing layer is supposed to be relitivly nutriant free...the point of the casing layer is to provide a microenvironment and extra water i believe, but correct me if im wrong =)------------------ Lady finger, dipped in moonlight writing "What for?" across the morning sky sunlight splatters, dawn with ansewer darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye

Your right Dino-Myc, my fault. When I said 2cm in diameter, what I meant was maybe 1cm. When I clipped and dried them out, they are exteremely thin. My point is that literature (PFtek's ordered book) suggests that I should be having problems with stalks that are *too* fat, esp at the base, rather than not enough. I am considering running my dual-chambered terrarium that I have now along side a perlite-method one, to see what differences there are, if any. Also, it has been suggested to crumble up the cake and drop a 1/2 inch layer of vermiculite casing on top of that. That sounds good, as it looks to me to be what those with the biggest crops used as their process. If I do this, should I place the crumbled casing in between the perlite and the verm., or should I put it on it's own separate (tupperware?) container, and then put that on top of the perlite, and inside the terrarium?

make sure air exchange is good - if it's not - you get thin stems, it also depends on your spores - if they suck you get - weird looking mushrooms.------------------ "How do you know I'am mad?" said Alice "You must be" said the cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."
