is the concept of an evil spiritual force adequately dealt with anywhere in new age literature?
    #7191179 -

i have recently read some new age lit. however, my feeling is that the problem of evil is inadequately if at all dealt with. where might i find lit that explains, or at least deals with, this topic?

i think its kind of an antiquated topic.

i think this might be more mysticsm forum, but in my own limited experiance learning about evil forces only invites it into your life, and possibly gives it energy overall.

very possible its all just a subconscious thing, nothing mystical about it. if you focus on evil, you'll feel and project evil, if you focus on other things, you feel and project other things.

At least psychologically and sociologically it can be rooted in the 'bad' that happens to oneself or a group one is belonging to.
Even if this 'evil' isn't intentioned as that by them who do 'bad', but only by their egocentric (for them 'good') activities out of their POV, those who were 'harmed' by that doing, formulate concepts about the intentional and self-existing evil, to build up an enemy picture, where there could be conclusion with those who intended no bad primarily.

Following your thoughts, maybe those who were 'harmed' (though I'm not sure whether the quotation marks needed, or not) begin to intentionally do bad... and still not thinking themselves as 'evil'...

in modern life
all that is good seems evil and all that is evil seems good

evil is a myth. all we have is energetic exchanges, and our perception of these exchanges. all is void though ultimatly at the end of the day.

it is definitely out of fashion to discuss evil as, well, existing at all. unfortunately, for my part, i'm convinced it does exist as a spiritual force. also, i do think its roots are in our subconscious while also being seperate from us. it battles in our subconscious against good, and we can sometimes see this battle play out consciously under the influence of psychedelics.

i'm not a 'Christian'. i'm not at all religious. however, and this frightens me, Christianity has given the best explanation that I've come across and seems right on some points as to how evil operates among mankind. if i'm gonna follow new age beliefs, this chasm must be dealt with more adequately.

You're partially right. But not entirely. :hehehe:
Evil also exists on the pool table... if you don't believe me, come and see for yourself :smirk:

I have never seen those who call themselves evil. Maybe ironically in some context in which they were 'against' something. Their intentions and actions definitively will make/identify them as that, even if they don't call or recognize themselves as those.

edit: Everything is 'sold' as 'good'.

No, just the chess board. And the pool table, but I have to investigate further into that first. :sherlock:

actions that are considered evil, come from a lack of a level of understanding. the closest thing we have to evil is ignorance, but
its not really evil, just lack of understanding.

it isnt possible to have any kind of evil spiritual force out there of any real power,(like satan, or powerful dark magicians) because spirituality shines light on ignorance. at least it does if one is making any real progress, otherwise they are simply ignorant of their ignorance. and ignorance is not empowering, so their is nothing really threatening about these kinds of people. (other than physical violence maybe)

sorry, but i'd consider adolf hitler a threat to humanity. considering we've come quite close to blowing uourselves up with nukes i find it difficult to accept your belief that 'evil' or 'ignorance' is no threat. where do you live bud? land of the sugar plum fairies?

Thank you.
When sugar plums are in short order even the fairies come down a notch.

easy on the sarcasm bud.  no one said it was indisputable.  i'm simply wondering if any deal with the nature of evil as a force OUTSIDE of the human mind.  I've seen evil interpreted as many here do:  humanity as ignorant and misguided, egotistical motivations, etc.  For my part, I can't accept that.  What's really frightening is some people dismiss the idea all together.  My feeling is many are too frightened to adequately deal with the problem.

What, pray tell, is "new age lit?" It would be more to the point to state whose literature you read and was it even aimed at the age-old 'problem of evil.'
M. Scott Peck, M.D. (author of The Road Less Traveled) is not a New Age author, but he wrote Glimpse of the Devil based on his experiences with evil under the tutelage of Malachai Martin who wrote the well-known book Hostage to the Devil (arguably the scariest book I've ever read).

Prior to his last book, Peck wrote People of the Lie which relegated evil to the realm of personality disorders, in particular, Borderline Personality Disorder (which he called by the old name 'Ambulatory Schizophrenia.') In Glimpses, under Martin's tutelage as a known exorcist (Roman Catholic Rite of Exorcism), Peck seems to affirm the notion of evil intelligence[s], not the classic idea of evil as 'Privatio Boni' - the Absence of Good.

Hinduism and Buddhism cast evil in the metaphysical guise of 'Avidya' - Ignorance, which mean human evil caused by people who are just too attached to this world in terms of their inordinate desires: greed, lust, power-mongering, etc. and who act from insatiable desire without reason and without compassion toward others. Demons and devils tend to remain in the mythic realm as illustrations of how not to be, rather than as forces to protect oneself from.

New Age lit as you put it, draws elements from many sources, incompatible sources often, and creates frivolous and shallow theories passed off as esotericism. So, for myself and for many others, 'New Age' means fluff, not substance. There may be exceptions, so, why not cite your references instead of being so vague? How can anyone respond to vagaries?
