pan subbs?
    #7130342 -

found: michigan backyard at a friends 4th of july party
habitat: grassy backyard
cap: younger ones had the bands like a pan subb (dark brown at top, fades to light tan in middle, fades back to dark brown around edge of cap). older ones were just solid tan. they lost the bands of colors as they dried.
stem: on average about 3 1/2 inces long, thin only a few mm thick. i didnt notice any bluing but i wasn't paying too much attention.
gills: greyish brown, attached to stem.
smell: kind of like black licorice.:D
spore print: black
peace:rasta:

I'm not sure. The black licorice smell is interesting as there are several species of Agaricus that smell just like that, whereas Pan subbs just smell like regular old mushrooms. How big were the caps?

im looking at the subbs in your gallery and they look just like that man (wishful thinking):smirk:
oh yeah another intresting thing i noticed was the alternating gill pattern, one gill would extent from the edge of the cap to the stem, the next one would only extend about a quarter of the way to the stem, and so on...

and by the way it did smell mostly like plain mushrooms it just had a hint of black licorice.

Be certain you don't have a small (or withered) Agaricus there.

Agaricus, as a general rule, have gills that are free from the stem.
As coon stated... you want prints as black as a snowman's eyes of coal... or as xmush once said... black as Jerry Falwell's heart... i.e. hell's darkest burning soul... or something like that

i just checked and the gills are free from the stem i am pretty sure, the sporeprint might have a hint of purple but i am not totally 100% sure. what color are Agaricus spores?

Agaricus spore prints are pretty consistently described as "chocolate brown"... dark chocolate. With this genus you will likely see an annulus as well.

In your first description you noted attached gills... often gills will detach as a mushroom ages or drys even if this isn't a consistent trait among the genus in question. To confuse you a little more, Pan subbs have adnexed to seceding gills sometimes giving them the appearance of being free.

Panaeolina foenisecii is of course another possibility. They have a slightly purplish print and fit the description of your mushroom pretty well.

Check out the offerings at mushroomexpert.com and compare your finds to photos.

As I can barely read, I'm unwilling to make any claims with regard to identity without a picture, sorry

they rarely blue(if any at the base of the stem),the stems can appear red,tan or almost white(usually have tiny white hairs.spore print will be jet black.look at tons of pictures of them, that will help.:igor:

i kinda have a hunch that they are Panaeolina foenisecii, because of the skinny stem. these arent active are they?
