A lot of subbs in lawns in Minnesota too. More foes, but a lot of subbs.

Mj I have surely found a lawn covered in Pan Subbs. Mind you I'd say it was 50% Pan. Subb, 50% Pan. Foe ( round a bout estimate ) But 6 grams was a decent trip, 12 grams being damn strong. I doubted my findings at first but I decided to bio-assay them anyways since Foes won't kill you and I had a pleasant time.

I'd say your chances are far better than you described. You just need a very well taken care of fertilized lawn, prefferably SOD.

In Ohio I've found subs ONLY in lawns.  Is it a good possibility Subbs grow in lawns (in addition to pastures) in this part of the states?  Michigan, Ohio, etc.  MANY people from my area claim they find in lawns all over this website, and only people from other areas are saying otherwise.

Subbs grow both in lawns and horse manure in all 50 states and most countries.

Idk about all 50 states, I haven't looked myself. But here in Southern MN, my lawn has been covered with smaller pan subbs. Jet black spore prints, and I have spore printed foes as well so I am experienced enough with the color difference.

I could see how people get them mixed up, especially earlier on in their newfound shrooming hobby. There are a number of variables to the process of spore printing that aren't usually considered when sharing info online. Things like the maturity of the mushroom at the time the print is taken, moisture levels, material used to catch the print, etc. A perfect spore print will have a relatively thick layer of spores in sort of piles between the gills.  The dark brown color can easily be mistaken for "black" to someone inexperienced.

One thing that can help is to take your spore print, assuming it is on a piece of paper, and drip a little bit of water onto the edge of it and allow that to soak into the paper and cause the spores to bleed color out into that moisture. Sometimes you see more defined color that way. A perfect spore print will have a relatively thick layer of spores in sort of piles between the gills.

We call them panaeolus cinctulus in this decade.
