Pan Subb look-a-likes?
    #334392 - 06/04/01 07:22 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

Are there any deadly species that have the appearance of Pan. Subbs that live on cow dung? I made a find today..found what I think is hundreds of Pan. Subbs. out in the cow fields in Middle TN today. I have never looked for Pan Subbs. though and have little exp. with them. They appear much like the recent Pan Subb pics on this board except some are missing that lighter ring on the outside of of the inner dark ring on the caps. They appear to stain DARK over about an hour but not almost instantly like a cubensis . Some have purplish bases to the stems. I'm taking spore prints from 2 of the caps currently. The sporing from them in the field appeared jet black perhaps with a purplish tint.. Unfortunately no camera currently..
Any help is much appreciated.

Another question...how is the bluing affect with Pan Subbs. I haven't noticed any BLUE in these at all really. At least nothing like Cubensis. The stems are purplish red on most of them..whitish toward the tops near the cap. When bruised/broke the stem very slowly(about 30mins-60mins) changes a VERY dark color..almost black where the break is.

That sounds about how the subbs I pick bruise. They won't blue on the stem, just darken, but if you pull up some white mycelium with the mushroom, it will stain a light shade of blue, nothing like a cubie. I would say you have a good chance that you found subbs, but I'm not going to confirm anything without a pic. Also, the small lighter colored ring around the very edge of the cap will only appear on healthy mature specimens, the sun bleached subbs will almost be white colored with no rings, even ones in the shade that are old will eventually loose their rings. It can get difficult to tell them apart from other Panaeolus, but once you find a fresh healthy one, there should be no doubt about it. Some will never get the lighter ring and will only have the dark belt around the edge of the cap. And the red colored stems you described is typical of Pan. subb.

Much thanks for the info.. I'll grab a digi cam in the morn and try to post some pics for a positive I.D. Is there a toxic species that grows in pasture land and resembles Pan Subbs? I don't want to taste test something deadly and I don't normally try anything without 100% certainty.
