A genetic basis for the inferior intelligence of most humans
    #7094525 -

Quote:
Three papers in this week's Science reveal genetic changes in humans that may have influenced brain evolution. Two genes involved in brain development have gone through positive selection in modern humans, according to two papers from the laboratory of Bruce Lahn at the University of Chicago.

Further reading reveals that a gene, named ASPM, underwent a mutation about 5800 years ago - around the same time as humans started living on farms and in villages. The mutated gene was rapidly selected for. Today about 40% of humans have the new and old gene, while 50% are completely without the new gene, having two of the old one. That leaves just 10% who have only the new gene. 10% of humans who will have a very expressed result of having this gene: a brain that works a little better than everyone else's.

10%...

Wow!  Just think how smart the 10% would be if they used more than 10% of their brains.

Seriously, though, that sounds about right.  Definitely not a bell-shaped distribution, but I suppose that those with both genes could have varying degrees of expressed intelligence due to more or less early childhood stimulation and degree of education.

Now the question is: shall we test for these genes?  Will we engage in gene "therapy" when the technology facilitates such?  What will the future look like if we integrate this knowledge into our society?

Somehow, I've always felt "more evolved" than most people I meet... just basic reasoning skills that baffle others.

I MUST be in that 10%!

Sorry Tren, but your thread title makes no sense whatsoever. Correct it BEFORE I do a public deconstruction.

Oh come now, swam...there's no need to start arguing semantics on this one. If you think there is a problem with my thread title, change it and show me :smirk:

Semantics? Not hardly. I will take a leap and guess that you are comparing humans to humans. So let's look here:

Most humans have inferior intelligence to humans. Do I REALLY need to go further? Sheeesh!

I'm not comparing anything to anything in the title statement.

Then the error is much, much worse than I originally thought. 'Inferior' is a COMPARATIVE word.

in·fe·ri·or –adjective

acting or performing in a way that is comparatively poor or mediocre

Ok my thread title is bad, you can go smoke that cigar now swami :smirk:

Now, did you have anything to add to the original discussion?

When I find illogic or a serious error in an article (or title) I rarely read further. How should the thread title read?

Once I understand what you are trying to point out, then I will comment on the 'meat' of your thread.

Cigar? No ego battle here - unless that is your perception.

"A genetic basis for the increase in intelligence of some humans"

Does that work? I thought what I was trying to convey was quite clear. Veritas seemed to get it pretty well, as did everyone in the thread, until you.

You also thought that a comparative word did not compare. Sometimes your thoughts are not very clear.

The error is now MY fault? Too rich! :rofl2:

I was driving home a few weeks ago and there was a large piece of a tin roof in the road and EVERYONE (except me) drove over it. I parked my car and REMOVED the obstruction BEFORE continuing the journey. That is how I operate.

When coming across an error, which is the BETTER strategy?

1. Make an assumption that may or may not be correct.

or

2. Ask the presenter for clarification.
