The nature of Anger.
    #688807 -

Today I had a talk with a friend. As we pondered the cosmos, we started to discuss the nature of anger. By anger of course we also mean Hate as well. After careful consideration, we came to the following conclusions:

Anger is a basic response to certain situations. It is also one of the easiest responses to have. And finally, it is one of the strongest emotions as well. Perhaps only the deepest truest love can challenge hate as the strongest human feeling. If somebody makes you mad, or does some thing you don't like, or otherwise bothers you, the instinctive reaction is to become upset in some form.

However, anger is blinding, it makes you do stupid things. Rednecks and gangbangers allow anger to dictate their actions. But to be a truely revolutionary induhvidual, you should perhaps try to control their anger. To see past their own point of view and see the other persons side of the situation. Also, if you can admit you are wrong if you truely are, that helps. The energy of anger can be transformed into something else, made useful, made constructive, if a person cares enough. Understanding is truely key to happiness.

Sometimes I get pissed and post messages in OTD that say something to the effect of: "bitch I'ma Kill You" I usually am just venting, but I look Like a jerk. I should not do that... but I do.

Very nice insight...

I went through some very serious anger issues. It was the ugliest side of me that I hope I never see again. My anger destroyed everything good that I had in my life, and I still carry the shame from it. It was really hard to go through, but I think I have learned a lot from it.

Yeah, anger can really do some damage. John MacInroe was on the TV just yesterday and he said what I have felt for many years, that anger helped him at some point in his young life and after that, he couldn't do without it until it had consumed much of what he had worked hard to achieve. In our society we see this all the time. Anger is another disfunction of our nature, almost like addiction. It is not really dealt with head on but ignored or even cashed in by business (anyone watch that fight recently with that Mike So & So guy?). If it makes anyone rich, then forget about getting real help. People might think you're crazy if you want help with such an issue. (See "Crazy" thread).

I actually did go somewhere seeking help for my anger issue...
they tried to turn it into a drug issue, that really pissed me off

So I put up with their bullshit for 3days, and then spent the next year figuring it out on my own.

break down anger and even hate a step further and you might find what I have found. anger and hate and all those "useless, harmful, negative" emotions stem from one thing, fear. now really that fear can be anything for anyone, and so its something personal that, although can be generalized, doesn't do much good for something which is so personal. Same with joy and happiness - consider a coin, you must have both sides of the coin, heads and tails to actually have a coin, you can't just have tails, and you can't just have heads, and even then consider it, its just a coin, those two different sides are completely different because thats how they are labeled, perceived and created. So is anger/hate/"negative" emotional response harmful and useless? perhaps if you consider them as harmful and useless...though great acts of love and creativity and compassion are just as violent, they are one and the same.

as the jedi master yoda speaks: the dark side is anger leads to hatred...hatred leads to violence...violence leads to suffering...and the cycle repeats

See, this is something else we talked about. If one decided to control the negative emotions as well as one could, why stop there? why not fully control all emotions and allow only logic and reason to influance you. Kinda like vulcans on star trek.

For example:

There is this girl that I love right. I see so much potential in her, she is really grerat, she likes me to. We have almost everything in common. However, we have some problems too, and her familly hates me, she is underage, still has to deal with daddy.

Perhaps, Logically I should say well it would be fun but ultimately not work out. To avoid pain, I should just deny my feelings for her. That is just one example of what I am talking about.

I hope that made sense.

Just thought I'd add:

Anger is a result of thought, which is the past. Which means anger comes through conditioning, the conditioning of the past. If you are truly living in the present, and your mind is not occupied with the past, there is no anger. Anger comes through measurement and comparison. You look at what you have and you compare it to what someone else has or what you could have, and this makes you angry. Anger is also a result of attachment. You may attach yourself to a certain pleasure or idea or object or person. But nothing in this universe lasts forever, so any attachment will inevitably bring anger, or sorrow. And of course it is possible to free yourself from anger, you simply need to let go of the past and of all your attachments. If you are aware of you anger and where it comes from, you can overcome it.

unless you are witnessing something right NOW. Like you walk in to a room and see your girlfriend being raped. then the anger is in the present.

The anger may be in the present but it is a result of the past. First your mind processes the information and decides how it is going to react, then you react with emotion. So the anger can exist in the present, but you are always argry about something that happened in the past, even if it is happening right in front of you, your brain first processes the information and relates it to your likes and dislikes, and your likes and dislikes are based on your past experiences and memories.

A good friend once pointed out to me that without tools to deal with problems, I would utilize the two I was born with, anger and fear.
