I was watching a show on one of the educational channels a couple of days ago. It was about UFOs. Peter Jennings hosted it. Anyhow, they had some sleep specialist who said that the type of thing the you experienced is due to a mental blurring of reality and REM sleep; a kind of limbo. Sometimes this is supposedly accompanied by a temporary paralysis. The expert said this is more common than we would think. I don't really know, but this is how they explained possible aliens in the bedroom.
