A love/hate relationship with 4/20.

Yesterday in the throes of an acid trip I was really thinking about drug use, its significance and importance, its role in different people's lives, and the way different people deal with and discuss their drug use.  The idea behind 4/20 is a fine one, I think.  Is there any holiday more rooted in reality, really? I mean, most holidays are Historical.  Such and such happened on this day, so we mourn, or remember, or celebrate.

Religious holidays, political holidays...in the face of an ever-widening web of information, and perspectives globally being shifted and expanded...these things, in my eyes at least, are losing relevance with every passing year.  The veil is being torn down...the things we hold and hang on to seem flimsy.

So why not celebrate this thing we do, this - getting high?  I mean, it's here. It's now.  You can't undiscover or un-exist marijuana. Or LSD. Or Mushrooms. It's in the culture, and it's not going anywhere.  I don't have a problem with 4/20 at all because I think it's healthy that we should all spend a day saying Fuck It and get high. BEcause "Fuck It" isn't a healthy attitude to hold 24/7/365, at least not all the time. :smirk:

It's the attitudes that make me have the /hate side of my relationship with 4/20. I wonder how many people who are getting high out of their minds today are really thinking about and being grateful to their drug. Yesterday, on my Bicycle Day trip, that was all I could think about - the eternal sense of gratitude I had for a shift in perspective. I think most people just wanna get as FUCKED as possible on 4/20 and not do anything.

I say if you're gonna get high as all hell today you should sit down and write about what pot's done for you, what drugs have done for you. Write down or paint a picture or make a collage or make ANYTHING at all and don't just be a lazy stoner on 4/20, do something to express to the rest of the world why you think this is something legitimate to be celebrated.

But hey...that's just my $.02. I won't be able to get too high at all today until well after midnight - I hope the rest of you enjoy.

I agree with you. I actually used to hate it when I lived in New York. Everyone walking around "4/20! Yeah man! Get High!" Sure, I would smoke when I got home after work, but it was just a normal day.

Well, I woke up this morning, took a shower, went on here and saw the new format. I looked at my bubbler still sitting on my coffee table from last night and did exactly what you said "fuck it". I can come to work high. No one will know at this new job, I guarantee it. I don't really interact with too many people anyway. I had a deep thought conversation listening to N.E.R.D on my ipod on the train this morning. I feel good. Motivated. Relaxed. And ready for a good weekend. I can't do this every day. I'm not really getting shit done workwise. But "Fuck it" right? There is always Monday to get it done.

I've found everything worth having in my life right now I have a love/hate relationship with. 4/20 is now added to that list.

Any holiday is going to be only truly appreciated for the right reasons by the thinking minority. Goes for Christmas, New Year, everything. So yeah, 4:20 is more relevant to many people today than traditional festivals, but most people will just get completely blazed instead of thinking about appreaciating it for its spiritual/cultural significance.

Im far more pro lazy stoners getting blazed today though than nonthinking idiots trooping to church on Christmas Eve just cos its the "done thing".

I appreciate that...but the Shroomery is just the Shroomery. It's practice - preaching to the choir, if you will.

I really need to sit down and figure out how to get myself out there into the rest of the world.

If 420 is, in your view, a holiday - why should one feel compelled to be productive? Will the exercise of creation lend more merit to the holiday? I believe creativity is vital for my own personal health and enjoyment of leisure time, but for many people in a different walk of life - those who are required to create every single day, artists, engineers, et al - it seems unfair to place a requisite that they maintain productivity on a day deemed holiday. Afterall, aren't these days of designation so often designed to offer a break from our norms? To those slaves of creation who face a necessity to be productive each and every day, I say they should be as lazy as they damn well please, especially on a day such as 420. Marijuana, much like alcohol, is more often used by the masses to distance ourselves from our conventional realities, than to instigate a higher order of creation and productivity. Perhaps you or I would like to see the reverse, and perhaps you or I behave in the manners of our respective ideals, but the way of things is not entirely of our choosing. So on that note, be productive, or be lazy, think, or forget. It is of no concern to me, though I would hope you would make your choice in an informed and open frame of mind.

Responsible use often gets confused for a legalize ploy, which is bullshit.

I had someone ask me what I'd tell High School students about drugs. I told them, "I wouldn't talk about why they shouldn't take them or what the drug will do to your health. I wouldn't tell them any horror stories. But, I would talk about life and taking care of your shit. Being responsible. Drugs are no excuse for irresponsibility. Drugs make it harder to be responsible especially if you advertize that you use. And that drugs do not make you cool. Keep that all in check and drugs won't be an issue. Also, stay in school."

Working for the DPA would be pretty damn cool and exciting. But, it sucks that many of the 'pro-drug' organizations seem to be on ignore. No matter the content of their messages.
