What a silly assumption.

You're assuming that a person with a concealed carry permit, on a college campus, would immediately have played hero and come to the rescue of the students under assault by the killer.

And that's putting a lot of faith in the small chance of someone carrying a concealed weapon being on/near the premises of the particular building where the shooting took place!

Unarmed and vulnerable

Bradford B. Wiles

Wiles, of New Castle, is a graduate student at Virginia Tech.

On Aug. 21 at about 9:20 a.m., my graduate-level class was evacuated from the Squires Student Center. We were interrupted in class and not informed of anything other than the following words: "You need to get out of the building."

Upon exiting the classroom, we were met at the doors leading outside by two armor-clad policemen with fully automatic weapons, plus their side arms. Once outside, there were several more officers with either fully automatic rifles and pump shotguns, and policemen running down the street, pistols drawn.

It was at this time that I realized that I had no viable means of protecting myself.

Please realize that I am licensed to carry a concealed handgun in the commonwealth of Virginia, and do so on a regular basis. However, because I am a Virginia Tech student, I am prohibited from carrying at school because of Virginia Tech's student policy, which makes possession of a handgun an expellable offense, but not a prosecutable crime.

I had entrusted my safety, and the safety of others to the police. In light of this, there are a few things I wish to point out.

First, I never want to have my safety fully in the hands of anyone else, including the police.

Second, I considered bringing my gun with me to campus, but did not due to the obvious risk of losing my graduate career, which is ridiculous because had I been shot and killed, there would have been no graduate career for me anyway.

Third, and most important, I am trained and able to carry a concealed handgun almost anywhere in Virginia and other states that have reciprocity with Virginia, but cannot carry where I spend more time than anywhere else because, somehow, I become a threat to others when I cross from the town of Blacksburg onto Virginia Tech's campus.

Of all of the emotions and thoughts that were running through my head that morning, the most overwhelming one was of helplessness.

That feeling of helplessness has been difficult to reconcile because I knew I would have been safer with a proper means to defend myself.

I would also like to point out that when I mentioned to a professor that I would feel safer with my gun, this is what she said to me, "I would feel safer if you had your gun."

The policy that forbids students who are legally licensed to carry in Virginia needs to be changed.

I am qualified and capable of carrying a concealed handgun and urge you to work with me to allow my most basic right of self-defense, and eliminate my entrusting my safety and the safety of my classmates to the government.

This incident makes it clear that it is time that Virginia Tech and the commonwealth of Virginia let me take responsibility for my safety.

no, i am saying that a person could prevent this from happening to them if they were armed.

Where I'm at we don't have these problems, but curious.

If such a ban would sees to exist, would an unarmed student be forced to share facility with armed students?

The English, Dutch, French, Spaniards etc...

History is in the eye of the beholder.:D

The indians were treated horribly and killed by the Spaniards, read any indian account of the history of their tribe under Spanish domination.

The Indian mine workers in Peru were cruelly exploited under the work system called the “mita”.

This was an Inca tradition under which all subjects would work for a time in public works under conditions that were close to slavery.

This system was used by the Spaniards in the silver mines of Potosí even though a royal decree in 1601 asked them to abandon such forced labor in favor of better treatment and salary in order to attract free Indians to do such work.

Donno... when I was living in Denver, there was a serial rapist on one of the campuses and they allowed CCW (carry concealed weapon) permits on campus. I remember something in the news about a big jump in the number of woman getting trained to shoot, requesting CCW permits, and buying guns.

Wait, are you seriously suggesting I wake up and strap on a firearm every morning, just in case there's a shooting on campus? Do you have any idea how rare these incidents are?

You probably won't see me argue for gun control on this board. But saying that a bunch of stressed, sleep deprived, drunken adolescents should start carrying, so they can maybe do something in the one-in-a-million event of a shooter... come on.

There are a lot of bizarre, freakish and extremely unlikely ways in which I, as a college student, might die. Rent those Final Destination movies. Doing volatile shit like arming myself to the teeth, just to check one way off the list, seems incredibly unnecessary.

I agree, 200 million Americans already have guns, might as well give them some more.

With a little luck you'll shoot yourselves off the face of the planet and the rest of us will sleep a little better.

Nope, I'm saying carry a small gun in your purse or backpack.

> just in case there's a shooting on campus? Do you have any idea how rare these incidents are?

I'm actually more concerned about rapes and muggings than campus shootings, but in spirit, yes, just in case there is a reason to need one.

If campus shootings are so rare (which they are), then why the huge push to make firearms illegal?

the shooter bought the guns legally, he wouldnt have been able otherwise considering he was described as a loner by every body which leads me to doubt he wouldnt know people to aquire guns for him if guns were illegal. which would leave 33 people alive today.
