IMHO, concentration is not the best way to meditate. Not only does it come with a sense of purpose (concentrating for some purpose, perhaps for some future goal), but it doesn't take in the full experience of being human. Instead of fully experiencing reality and the mind, you limit yourself to focusing on only a specific part of the mind and a specific part of reality.

Great post Sinbad. Your post brought up a curiosity in my mind, and that is how often do you meditate? Do you make a schedule of it (i.e. - everyday at 8pm I will meditate for an hour) or do you just do it when you feel to and for however long you feel to? Or maybe something else, who knows.

From your quote I can't tell whether you're suggesting single-pointedness at the expense of other aspects of the mind, such as thoughts and intellectualizing, or if you're suggesting a single-pointedness that arises naturally of itself, without excluding or ignoring anything.

Tuning your mind like a musical instrument is the perfect way to describe it i think. Music is parallel to life in so many conceptual ways, except without all the extra baggage that can become distracting. Understanding these parallels is what got my foot in the door, and is the basis of my philosophy.

It can be helpful to meditate in a standing position..
This is helpful for me when I don't feel healthy and/or can't feel my chi, or I haven't meditated in a while.

first balance yourself on both of your feet, imagine each of your feet as a triangle and balance your body weight in the center of each foot, with bent knees, and a straight back.

meditate with your eyes open and try absorb as much as you can from your surroundings :ooo:

or Just Be

No, I'm not talking about single-pointedness at the expense of other mind states, that would be absorption. The gradual way, (Tibetan, shine) is to meditate using an object to train in awareness. This kind of presence needs to be cultivated first for, without object, and beyond subject and object meditations to be most effective.

Standing meditation is fine. As long is back is straight is the main point.

Oh okay, cool. As you may be able to guess, I'm not very familiar with Tibetan and similar meditation techniques.

Tibetan and Indian gradual methods, more or less do the same way. Chinese and Japanese non-gradual sutra tradition, also give some importance to training with an object, but more emphasis on wisdom directly.

Yeah in the farther eastern traditions, there is certainly much more emphasis on the sudden school. Hui-Neng was big on that and argued that in fact dhyana is prajna, or that meditation is actually wisdom itself, and that awakening occurs suddenly. I find myself more drawn towards the sudden school, but everyone has their own temperament and the beautiful thing is that there are many schools to suit many temperaments.

In the gradual school, when you say that one-pointedness is cultivated first, are you referring to something like dharana in Ashtanga yoga? Where there is a progression of dharana then dhyana then samadhi? When I first read the Yoga Sutras, I tried sitting with dharana for hours at a time, and I must say it is rather difficult!

the main thing with the philosophies of the various schools of enlightenment like these is to keep shifting what seems superior:

it's a game.

soon the student may begin to catch on that they are all the same, and that his self image had been erroneously based upon comparing his renunciate status against that of others.

a huge laugh can be had when this cloud of "comparative" self importance vanishes.

realizing the buddha nature is not actually subject to angle or "shape of spine". practice of healthful postures are great, but the most important thing is not a physical position nor is it any single particular action or added routine.
some awakenning to what is already happenning is most important.

What would happen to one that has his or her eyes closed while attempting to reach a meditative state?

I don't really have a complete understanding of eyes closed vs. open but one thing I would say is its easier to become sleepy and too relaxed, too loose, with eyes closed

Gandalf: ...And then you see it.

Gandalf: White shores . . . and beyond. A far green country, under a swift sunrise.
Pippin: Well, that isn't so bad.
Gandalf: [Softly:] No... No it isn't.

i have a question about the back. i am tall and lanky, and find myself going more to a natural straigthness as opposed to as straight as possible, which i can only sustain for a matter of seconds before i begin to get lower... is my back muscle weak or shouold we not try to be "as straight as possible"
thanks
