removing cat claws

yes, declawing is very common among domestic cats.

I'd never have it done to a cat of mine, but my cat had his front paws declawed by a previous owner.

I would certainly not do it if the cat was an outdoor cat, because then it cannot fend for itself, and is less stable when climbing....

But Marybells cat has been mutilating her(?) in her sleep.

We have cats here, which were indoor cats for most of their lives. They all still have their claws though. It does suck when they try clawing up the furniture, but I still wouldn't get them removed.

I've tried a few different types of scratching posts and pads.
They don't ever use most of them. The only type they have ever actually consistently used were these disposable cardboard scratching pads that are filled with catnip. They love those things.

The cat that lives at my house (not really my cat- not sure whos it is... think some neighbors who is on probation. Anyway, the cat scratches my bed constantly....

I feel that declawing is slightly cruel (due to pain caused to the cat due to "eternallly' sore paws), but then again I've never owned a cat, so I can;t really speak to the frustrations of clawed-up furniture and the like. (I'd love to have one though) :smile:

yeah, i reccently got a kitten... hes now about 4 months old.. and we are waiting another 2 months before getting him declawed and nuetered.

Damn, it scratches up wood and stuff? Ours usually jsut do it on the carpet or something made of fibers like the couch. :undecided:

I haven't seen any evidence which supports the alleged "cruelty" of declawing.
IF it is painless, then I see no reason not to declaw INDOOR cats.

Also, it isn't JUST the furniture- cats leave marks!

If the cat recovers within a few weeks from the surgery, i consider that fair. If it is life long tenderness/sensitivity, then a couple cat scratches does not justify the pain caused to the animal.
And under no circumstances would i declaw an outdoor cat for the reasons stated above: self defense, and stability.

I dunno, the person I heard this (the whole declawinfg = animal cruelty thing) from was an animal advocate, but she was also affiliated with PETA, so that may explain a bit. So I suppose I have no real evidence that declawing causes harm either. But I guess any doubt at all isn't a positive thing, huh? I dunno, if I ever have a cat, which I probably will (kitties = cuteness), I probably won't declaw them, just deal with it, but I would like to know how much of this is simply crazy animal advocatre blather and how much is actual cruelty.
