for the past 7 years or so.
this chick I know was all like: "You should get new couches, these couches suck!"
but I love my couches!
they are comfy and they have sentimental value.

Why bother as long as the cat is around. But some on, I'm sure you can find a new couch that's just as comfortable if not more.... You're just sentimentally attached too. I just got a new couch so I'm not close like that with it yet. Plus I don't sleep with it as much as I used to.

Changing around your everyday sights rocks. For instance, I just got a new keychain, and I get a killer buzz whenever I take it out.

There are plastic covers for the corners of furniture made to deter cats from clawing them. They're hard plastic peices that protect the corners. You tack them onto the furniture and the cats lose interest in scratching them.
then, you buy a scratching post. With the furniture no longer an option, the cat wil find the next best thing, which will be the scratching post. Use a bit of catnip on the post as extra incentive.

Cats will only claw on the things that are really stable. Your cat scratching post really has to be big for them to like it

well if you want to train your cat. take some empty beer cans, and put about 10pennies in each one, then tape them shut, if you see your cat doing somthing you dont like, such as ripping apart your couches, throw one by him/her and the noise will freek them out.
after while theyll stop. you can also use a water gun, and just shoot at the cat. same effect.

zippoz "in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption" "People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

A couch with sentimental value, reminds me of a Men Behaving Badly episode
Those softpaws sound lame. If the cat can't scratch anything anymore then how does it prevent it's nails from growing too large? Do you have to cut the cat's nails then?
I would try to train the cat to scratch something else.
My cat is much worse. She is almost 20 and doesn't really want to go outside so she has started crapping in the house. First the attic, then the bathroom, now the hall. She also has problems using a kitty litter I just bought, she pees on the side and everything still flows on the kitchen floor. I've already tried rubbing my cat's face in the crap. Cats usually learn that they should crap there anymore. But my cat is to old to learn I guess.
