Neither one of those are serious issues or even slightly difficult to fix.

You really think you can train a cat not to scratch furniture or kids? Good luck with that one lol
You might be able to train A cat, one that is obedient and good in nature, but ALL cats?

I've met some asshole cats that have clawed the fuck out of me as a kid. All the cats I've owned over the years though were cool. Never owned a litter box.
One cat would post off the freezer we had and push the sliding screen door open and go outside. Sweet cats. Hard-core predators I could imagine if I did keep them in they would be mad at me. Leading to asshole cats. It's animal abuse to keep them as "indoor" cats imo.
They need to hunt that's why they bring mice home to there owner. It's a gift. My last cat brought home a mouse and bird. How the fuck do you even catch a bird. Nice work kitten.

I can see why somebody wouldn't let their cat outdoors, especially in the city. That's how they get run over by cars, or eaten by dogs or other wild animals.

Oh I'm not talking city. Obviously if I lived in a small apartment in a skyscraper ya no. But I doubt I'd have an animal in that case.
In Seattle i wouldn't have had an animal. Mr dog stayed with ma. But other than that I generally live in more rural areas and animals need space to grow.
My last cat was a thug. She came home with a chip out of her ear. She obviously got in a fight with something larger than her. Damn kitten. Im guessing a raccoon. Silly kitten but she obviously knows when to pick and choose her battles.

I've never lived in a place that has coyotes? Alaska and Washington. Everywhere else that I've lived I didn't have animals. As it was short term 9-12 months.
Nah I just edited my post before yours take a look at it.

I thought there's bears in Alaska?
There's too many coyotes where I live, they've even eaten a neighbor's dog. I would be too afraid to let cats out just for that reason alone.

Cats are natural predators. Cat breeds that are indoor cats are the chihuahuas of the breeding spectrum. Useless.
My cats and dog were mutts. I dont want some pure bred as those sorts of dogs do act like dicks. Or they're bred to uselessness. Ie your chihuahuas and cats I guess. We always had them for rodent issues. To kill. And kill they do. Nature's sociopaths. But they love me for whatever reason. High five kitten!
There's bears crystal but it's not like they're roaming the street in thugged out groups they hibernate in mountains and you barely see them in small cities. Well never. Unless you go fishing. I've seen monster grizzlies come down to fish the area as well.
Luckily they were on the mountain side but that was startling. I read an article recently moose population are booming. Because of highways. Moose are what you had to really worry about as you don't want to hit one In a car. But kill it with a high powered rifle your friends and family eat well for a year.

I got a moose at 16. In Alaska there was not the socialism you see in Washington. It's made me soft.
.30.06 Springfield nailed it 200 yards out. Dad handed me the rifle this is yours. Tracked it not a great shot. High left but hit enough to kill. Fed us for a year. Good times I miss those times and hate socialism. Ah oh well.
The other in Alaska is dipnetting 100 salmon a year than you can fish all year. Yea yea!! We didn't have food stamps or anything. You eat what you kill. My dad made it a game for me dipnetting. Hit them until they die Die fish die!!

Cats are more stubborn and a little different than dogs. But you can train them. No you can't train all cats because they're slightly closer to wild animals than most domestic dogs (and the "big cats" they were bred from were not very social creatures) and they need to 'hunt' and explore, like I said earlier. And on top of that if they still have behavior issues, like dogs, they need to be trained. And in both cases it helps if you understand how a cat thinks, which most people do not.
City cats are seriously deprived. Just like dogs if you keep them cooped up in an apartment all day they're going to lash out. They're different than dogs and low maintenance but they're not different and low maintenance in the way most people think. I mean yeah a few cats raised in an apartment can be okay, especially if they have a play mate but more often than not, JUST LIKE DOGS, there's a reason they're assholes.
I've had about 6-8 cats and the only time they've ever scratched a child is when the child was tormenting it. My brother's cats scratch their furniture because they don't consistently discourage them (my sis thinks it's cruel to use spray bottles...) and my ex gfs cat was a shithead because she never got her fixed and everything the cat did was obviously related to her heat cycles. Even still I've trained most of those cats one thing or another. My first cat could sit and shake and fetch just like a dog. My bros cat, the one that tears up his furniture, I've trained to stop any obnoxious behavior with a snap of my fingers. I can't work on the furniture issue because its not my house but she doesn't do that shit when I'm in the room.
Never lived in the depths of the city so most of my cats have been indoor/outdoor. My current cat was neglected and abused by her previous owners but she's still probably the sweetest cat I've had. So personality does matter, but most cats can be trained if you understand they're not people and they're not dogs. They are pets. They are mammals. They are intelligent animals that our dumbasses don't understand most of the time. Alot of people could improve if they'd take the time to learn and work with their feline.
Just. Like. Dogs.

I think I'll get a pet bear and not train it cuz everyone knows you can't train wild animals.
I'll send you guys a post card when it tears out my throat because I didn't teach it any discipline at all.

I have owned numerous cats throughout my life, none were trainable.
I am not saying it's out of the realm of possibility, but I don't know how to do it. Even providing the little bastards a scratching post they still destroyed several pieces of furniture.
On a different note, I like that about cats, that they have such a strong will, I respect that.

My cat's are two different personalities so in a sense I lucked out, but they use this to their advantage to try and trick me by leaving the yard or scratching the sofa.
I do not care about furniture really it's just you can't own cats if you need beauty rest at night starting off.

Sadly the only way to train a cat to stay in the yard is to have it on a leash.
Unless they are fat or old.

My cat used to explore when she was young but she stays in the back yard now. Once in a blue moon she will go to next door.
She just loves sitting outside.

Seriously? When I was a veterinary technician we were taught that cats are almost impossible to train.
Cats are nothing like dogs. There's a reason nobody teaches their cat commands like how to sit or beg for treats.
