question about hypnosis/creative visualization
    #6305568 -

Hi I was wondering if anyone out there can help me. Ive been trying to find information on self hypnosis. Ive been doing excersises daily for roughly a week, Im trying to reach an intensly altered state of conciosuness. But I cant tell if Im progressing... I mean I think Im am but very little. Whenever I read about these excersises they are written as if I should be able to "visualize a beautiful garden" or a "tropical island". My main question is does intensly clear visualization and/or altered states associated with self hypnosis and "creative visualization" come with practice? In other words with every practice should the visualizion get clearer and more intense. Im new to this so excuse my ignorance. Any help is much appreciated.

Yes, practice makes progress. But while practicing also practice focus on what is being practiced.

Sticking with something when instant results are not obtained is difficult for most everyone. Intent is the glue that holds.

Consider purchasing or otherwise aquiring a golden pocket-watch with a chain. Obtain some paint for model cars and add some spirals to it. Swing it back and forth, in front of your face, in a consistent, precise, mechanical fashion. Self-hypnosis.

Awareness is an intriguing phenomenon.

if you are practicing visualization, but not taking your other senses into consideration, the picture won't be as clear.

Adding sounds, smells, temperature, humidity, tastes, etc. that's when you get a clear picture, since images in your head are just that - images. To be immersed in something, it must occupy enough senses to convince you it's real.

Of course, if you are a visual person (I am), then manifesting the sense of touch, or smells is much harder than imagining a picture / movie in your head, but with practice you will get better.

Leslie LeCron's book Self Hypnotism is a classic which can introduce you to the use of the Chevreul Pendulum. It can get a self-practitioner into 'the working state' of hypnosis which many of us refer to as 'Somnambulism' (no, not sleep walking). It is a state in which one can become hypnotized with eyes open, and then one's gaze can be redirected to a folded index card (for example) on which is written a brief suggestion. If entranced, the message should go right into the subconscious.

Now, if you are referring to visualization exercises such as 'Active Imagination' (as taught by the late Jungian Barbara Hannah in her book by the same name), or along the lines of Tibetan monks visualizing a 3-dimensional Kalachakra Mandala, then it it not hypnosis that you want. These types of practices (as Hannah admits) fall under a category of schools of 'magic[k]'). Profound alterations of consciousness can and do occur. As a longtime analysand of Jungians, I can attest to very radical changes that can occur when one begins an inner visualization and dialogue with a dream character. I recommend the book by Hannah for explication as I do not know what your intention is.

Thanks to all, youve been a great help.

Markthegnostic,

Im interested in the occult arts in general. I would consider "hypnosis" a practice/phenomena that would fall under the afformentioned category along with "creative visualization" and a nything dealing with altered states. But to answer your question Im very interested in both and thanks for the reccomendation.

My mind right now is weak...I drink too much, I get nothing done, Im lazy, I cant follow a book to well(mind wanders), depressed, anxious, etc. I thought I would start at the rock bottom and work my way up. So Im practicing self-hypnosis, in order to train the mind for whats coming. Ive had several chemical induced mystical experiences, but it seems as though society kindof causes the effect to wear off after about a few months(depending on the intensity of the exp , of course). But after these trips I would be happy and more successful, until strss takes over again.

Anyway, after hypnosis, I was going to move on to meditation, and then remote viewing, and then start working with high magick. Im afraid if I jump right into the intense stuff I will get fewer/weaker results. The last time I got into it, it actually scared me off, because the moment I startes practicng/reading on it, my world warped around me, my reality actually altered to a precision that the books I was reading described, and the experience was far too intense, so I backed off of it.Drinking was an easy escape, training the mind to in the occult way is far more of a brave thing IMHO. Its too bad that people in our society are trained to believe that we have no power over our minds/reality. That we are in fact mindless drones that must conform. That all this ancient esoteric knowledge that has been practiced for so long by so many generatians, just hocus-pocus, psuedo-science and theres "nothing to it". If we have a problem.. see a specialist. Feeling ill? See a doctor. Having issues at home? Call Dr. Laura. But NEVER EVER EVER try and solve any issues on your own.

It takes time to form the connections in your brain. Every time you focus a visualization, an emotion, a chakra, and anything else together, it takes time to strengthen each one and the connections among them. Usually, visualizations are used with other things that are naturally related and work synergistically together. As the connections form stronger, the individual tools like visualizations become stronger as well, (and vice versa) due to the synergy effect. Making and strengthening the connections makes a huge difference in what you can do with focus points like chakras and visualizations.

Generally, you connect on three levels-
1.physically
2.energetically
3.mind

Things like mandalas and/or visualizations connect on these levels. For example, I may visualize that my kidneys are blue, while breathing highly oxygenated blood into them. The kidneys are the physical part, the breath and energetic reaction is the energy part, and the color blue is the mind part. Of course this is an over simplification, but you may get the point. These three levels are important because they keep you grounded in reality, no matter how high your mind floats around. I am assuming the fear you felt when working with those depths is most likely because you were not grounded into reality well enough, or that your intention was perhaps unclear and/or not for ballance. Good luck and be careful.

BTW, I am not a guru, sensei, or anything like that. Please don't take anything I say as instruction or as a 'claim' of what I do. I'm just trying to give you another perspective on the subject.

As far as self hypnosis is concerned, I would advise you to be very cautious when dealing with a western scientific approach to the mind. Science is very young, and there are a lot of far more wholly developed systems of cultivation out there than what western science offers. I'm not knocking western science, it's just that it is in its infancy. I think western science definitely has a good place in things though.

hypnosis, from the way I understand, it has been a medical practice even amonsst the most "primitive" of cultures, used as anesthesia, etc. maybe you are speaking of a westernized approach to hypnosis?
