Hypnosis
    #1109318 - 12/04/02 09:37 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone know where I can find some info on hypnosis? I don't mean like where can I learn to hypnotize my friend and make him hump a pillow, I just see all the talk about it all over like its an accepted scientific thing....and I'd like to learn more about it. I see pyschatrists using it on TV in a variety of ways......helping people remember abductions and such. I watched a series of interveiws with a serial killer in my criminology class (can't remember who it was at the moment, its almost 10am and I havn't been to sleep yet, prolly not good that I have my finals in a little more then an hour), but anyway the guy faked having multiple personalities, the tape showed him under hypnosis and not. The whole hypnosis thing seems a little far fetched to me

My father is a trained clinical hypnotist. I know of one case (when he first started) where he used hypnosis to help a woman overcome her 8 year addiction to legally prescribed pain medication and leave her wheelchair for a walker (her condition was the result of an automobile accident). Not necessarily a miracle, but a damn good improvement that she was never able to achieve with standard medicine.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I am certified by the National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists as a Diplomate in Clinical Hypnotherapy. I've been practicing both privately, and in in middle school settings since 1989. Go to www.natboard.com, which has my own listing, as well as listings from all over the USA. I have been successful in the alleviation of certain phobias, stuttering, nightmares and anxiety. I used to hypnotize the 9th grade wrestling team prior to a match. Though not a statistically measured, controlled study, they always did exceptionally better. It is not a magic wand, it is a series of techniques that access the subconscious level of the psyche wherein certain emotionally charged obstacles continue to operate, until removed. Long-forgotten memories can be retrieved or relived, if it doesn't cause too much distress or re-traumatization. Bad habits can be replaced with healthy substitute behaviors. It is a short-term, highly effective form of psychotherapy.

My only personal experience with hypnosis was a series of past-life regressions...and a sort of self induced trip... I don't know.. rather hard to explain. My experience with it was very pleasant, one must be comfortable and trusting with their hypnotist. They simply guide you to access subconscious levels of yourself. You can learn the technique and do it on your own.

Correct - ALL hypnosis is self-hypnosis. I am the guide. I'll record the session and give it to the client in order to re-experience it as needed. The Cherveul pendulum is for self-hypnosis alone - no swinging it in someone's face saying "you are getting sleepy."

Thanks for your corroboration. Yes, the mind can be reprogrammed, but there are other useful metaphors, like the correction of an astigmatism on an otherwise perfectly healthy lens; the netting of an impurity suspended in an otherwise clear pool of water; or in the case of events that are damaging to the warp and woof of the psyche, a means for complete detachment of the emotions from unforgettable images. Mostly, is the important de-hypnotising effect of all the well-intentioned lies that most everyone has programmed us with since day one. Self-emptying, however, is just the first stage. We need to replace the bad with the good. Nature abhors a vacuum, in psychic space as well, so "the establishment of selective thinking" is crucial. Like the protagonist in H.G. Well's 'The Time Machine' who returned to the future with 3 books, to begin again...which 3 would you take into yourself?
