ALL hypnosis is self hypnosis. Hypnosis is itself a range of states that goes from hypnoidal (like veging in front of a TV, or 'white line' fever on the highway, when you drive blissfully past your exit, to hypnotic coma (the Esdaile State) wherein limb amputations can be done not only painlessly, but with a minimum of bleeding (because the subconscious can control things like bleeding, whereas the conscious mind with its willpower cannot).

There are many, many models of how hypnosis works, and many different models can be used as a basis for practical application. The definition that I have used since 1989, by the late Dave Elman is: "Hypnosis is a state of mind in which the critical faculty of the human is bypassed, and selective thinking is established." The critical faculty is the rational-analytical process that constantly questions in an inner monologue ["I wonder why he's asking me to do this, and to imagine that, and count backwards...etc."] The hocus-pocus aspect of an induction is like a slight of hand magician who distracts one's attention so that he can move quickly elsewhere and effect an illusion. A hypnotist must distract a person in such a way that the critical faculty ceases to operate for a time. When that occurs, one can then direct the subject's attention away from analytical thinking to re-experiencing of subconsciously held images, memories, feelings and events. The conscious mind's critical faculty recedes, and subconscious, subliminal perceptions that are usually unseen because of the predominanting influence of consciousness, can emerge. It is like the stars, which are always present, but cannot be seen because of the predomonating glare of one star - the sun. When the sun (consciousness) sets, the stars (subconscious contents) can emerge. Hypnosis is more of an art than a science, as is psychotherapy in general, but when used compassionately in the service of healing, it is most efficient (time wise) and quite effective in the alleviation of many types of problems.

Might I add, for my own purposes other than hypnosis, that the Sun is just one star, but all the other stars that appear when the Sun does not obstruct their view are an entire Universe.. And they are always there, it is just whether or not we can see them...

All right, game on!
Peace.

Markos pretty much nailed it.. all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, a hypnotist is merely a guide. It is essentially quieting and focusing the conscious mind to any point in the subconscious or unconscious. You can go as deep as you allow yourself. You are able to explore memories in detail, and face many fears or roots of thought patterns at will. To me it is just another form of meditation and healing/inner insight.

Markos, regarding deep trance like hypnosis (the kind that
stage hypnotists induce). How long can one stay in such a state ?
I mean, theoretically, can one stay in that state forever ?

No. The trance state usually degrades into sleep. Suggestions made while in hypnosis can remain for a year or longer, however. There is an interesting but unethical practice called the 'hypnotic seal,' which can prevent an individual from being hypnotized by anyone but the person applying the seal, or by anyone period. This suggestion would therefore seem to endure, but I'm not aware of anyone having this applied. It can be threatened by, say, a stage hypnotist whose subject refuses to come out of trance. The threat usually brings the subject around, since [s]he is so enamoured of the state and would like to experience it again.

It is -precisely- that.  Placebos can be extremely powerful things.
