    #1836541 - 08/21/03 10:50 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I'm curious to know more about the experience
and how it feels like...

Yes, many years ago... very similiar to a lucid dream. While it was happening, I thought I was very aware of everything... but after talking to my friends that watched it, there was _a_lot_ that I missed.

Hey that just reminded me ! I had a lucid dream last night !
I walked into my kitchen and noticed bottles of Maple syrup
everywhere that I never purchased, and then wham the realization
hit me that I was dreaming :smirk: I lept out the window
and started flying around for a while but the dream started
to fade just as I was enjoying it :frown: but then I half woke up in
a strange trance like state and was visualizing some strange
geometrical object in a bright white light and then went back
into the lucid dream, but then it faded again quickly.
Sorry for the digression.
Did the hypnotist make u do anything strange/embarassing/that
u wouldn't normally do ? if so, what compelled/convinced u
to act that way ? i.e. what were your thoughts at those moments ?
or were those the parts that u missed ?
Thanx for sharing

Sounds to me like you had a clandestine sexual encounter by the refridgerator light with the Queen of pancakes, Aunt Jemima

> Did the hypnotist make u do anything strange/embarassing/that

Not that I remember, though my friends were full of stories. He (the hypnotist) started out with about 20 or 30 volunteers on stage pulled from the several hundred that were watching. I was not one of these. They turned down the lights and he started talking to the people on stage, relaxing them, focus on breathing, etc... I must have been following too closely because I ended up on stage with everybody else.

I don't remember it, but my friends sitting next to me tell the story. After he put everybody on stage under, there were a few that didn't go. He sent those back to the audience and asked the audience if there were any people out there that had gone under. There were three or four of us. He told us that we were on an airplane, back in coach, and that there were bugs everywhere so they needed us to move up to first class (the stage) while they sprayed for them. He must have described the bugs climbing on us or something because my friends said I plowed through two rows of chairs trying to 'get away from the bugs' before I made it to the isle/stage.

Some of the other stories that I was told that I don't remember... he had me get up and count to ten... but had asked me to forget that the number four existed. He asked how many finger I had, which I answered 10. He asked me to count them... 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11... well, obviously one hand must have 5 and the other 6... lets see which is which... left hand: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6... well, lets check the right hand too... 1, 2, 3, 5, 6... what is 6+6? ... 12... so first you claim to have 10 fingers, then you count 11, now you count 12... what is going on? Oh... I just grow extra fingers when I need them...

On your off the subject lucid dream subject... have you ever managed to die in a lucid dream? I spent many months working on this once, and managed it two or three times. I am still kicking, so the rumor that if you die in a dream, then you die in real life isn't true, for me at least.

Yes but who amongst us could possibly be rationally discrimianting or discerning with Aunt Jemima cooing gently  in his/her ear in a voice as smooth as a hot buttered pancake: "Spread your wings Lucid, you can FLY!"

Wow ! that's pretty amazing ! thanks for the details
they say that u could never do anything under hypnosis that
u wouldn't normally do, I wonder how far that's true.
Also, I wonder how long a hypnotic trance like the one
u were under can last... I mean can it last indefinitely ?
And I wonder how we manage to lose part of our rationality
under hypnosis (i.e. like with the fingers and the number 4).

> they say that u could never do anything under hypnosis that

I'm not sure.  For example, I don't think a hypnotist could 'make' me shoot somebody outright... but they could probably create an artificial reality where I was convinced that it was shoot or be shot...

> Also, I wonder how long a hypnotic trance like the one

I was on stage for just over two hours.  It felt like maybe 10 minutes at most.  Without somebody there to maintain the focus, I probably would have fallen asleep and woken up as normal.

> And I wonder how we manage to lose part of our rationality
under hypnosis

I'm not sure that anybody knows.   As I said before, it was very dream like.  Even coming back to normal, I could remember a lot of the things that happened, but they faded very quickly... just like when I wake up from a dream.

It was a fun experience.  I always thought that the people on stage were faking, or just going along for the show, but now I know that isn't always the case.

Sounds very dream like. I was blown away the first
time I saw a stage hypnotist and like u initially
thought it was fake. Goes to show the power of suggestion.

my friend while on holiday in spain was hypnotized on stage.
he says now that he was aware of his surroundings while hypnotized, but soon after it ended the memories faded, much like a dream.
the hypnotist proceeded to tell him that whenever he shook hands he would have an orgasm!
what followed was my friend thinking he'd creamed his pants and telling everyone he needed some fresh clothes.

i was not on this holiday so the info is from someone who was with him. i dont know much else.

also; my mum was hypnotized back in the late 80's and she wouldnt respond to anyone or do anything for about 10mins. apparently the hypnotist was worried, but she just snapped out of it. she doesnt remember anything from the experience.

This is sort of like asking what a psychedelic experience feels like - completely open-ended. I'm a Certified Diplomate in Clinical Hypnotherapy (NBCCH), and I've been using hypnosis since 1989. Most of the time I use the David Elman (d. 1959) induction, which employs progressive relaxation and temporary amnesia of numbers (to confound the rational-analytical mind that we call the "critical faculty"). The procedure takes 6-10 minutes on the average. Selective memories can be 'spotlighted' in this state (called somnambulism - the 'working' state). The Esdaile State, also called Hypnotic Coma, is not a state that I use, but it goes deeper than Somnambulism, and hundreds of cases of limb amputations without the use of chemical anaesthesia have been documented. Extreme dissociated states occur in the Esdaile State, and artificial catatonia, with 'waxy-flexibility' [you can arrange arms and legs in weird ways, and they'll stay that way] is established.

My first (and best) 100 hour hypnosis course was given by a one-time stage hypnotist. I have also taken another training in 'Existential Hypnosis' which didn't use trance induction, and some training in Neurolinguistic Programming, which took forever to get a subject 'hypnoidal,' but not somnambulistic.

I suppose your question is really aimed towards 'what does hypnotic trance feel like?' Somnambulism results in 'sinking' or 'floating' sensations (I suggest both), with heightened listening capabilities, enhanced concentration, deep relaxation, and unusually effective recall of long-past events, replete with many details (e.g., the color and texture of the floor upon which one took one's first baby steps). I can't report on the Esdaile State, but even though the subject has aphasia (unwillingness/inability to speak), s[he] can hear what's going on. BTW, so can subjects in chemical anaesthesia, or true coma victims.

I got up on stage when I was back in HS. But then I got sent back down to the audience cause I "wasn't easily hypnotized" :frown:

Still got to see some funny shit though

Hmmm. I'm familiar with the directory of the National Board here in the states (www.natboard.com), but I've never sought practitioners in Canada, so I can't recommend anyone. Sorry.

so without all that technical jargon, what exactly do you do to hypnotize people? cause it sounds like bullshit to me.

I've always wanted to be hypnotized to see what it felt like. I've tried those self-hypnosis techniques and that's a bunch of bs.

From your explanation though it sounds very similar to the state of mind during a light anesthesia or sleepwalking or even when you space out for fifteen minutes driving that boring route you take to work every day.

If so that might be interesting. I'd love to try that sometime.
