Are we Hypnotized?

I was thinking about this altered state of consciousness today, and its a weird one for sure. I first thought about it due to it proving the power of suggestion.

It seems it allows the hypnotist to access ones outer programming, I'd say you would need to be a very submissive person for it to work. I don't understand tho how can someone be controlled like a robot just by a persons voice so easily, are us humans really that venerable? I know it has limits, as you can't go against ones will, and certainly alot of people can't be hypnotized.

The other state it may produce is life like hallucinations, where that person actually "sees" something that is suggested to them. As if they are in a open eyed dream like state. High dose of shrooms, or acid for me doesn't even faintly create hallucinations and they blow suggestibility out the window!......What gets me is how easily under this hypnotized state, a whole world can be created and played out. Tho a person may not have any memory recollection of what happened, as if they were just asleep the whole time.

Maybe we are all hypnotized to some degree?

I think we are all vulnerable at sometime or another to commercial or other advertising techniques.

I think the actor who portrays Sherlock Holmes fits the character to a 'T'. I wonder how much this is due to advertising, or gravitation, which I suppose can be a technique.

The kind of hypnosis you're thinking about doesn't exist. True hypnosis is nothing more then a state of high suggestibility, having nothing to do with submissiveness.

One cannot be controlled by the hypnotist, and one cannot be hypnotized without one's willing participation.

It's a state of mind in which the subject of the hypnosis is consciously aware of what's happening, and going along with what the hypnotist says. One does not forget what happens during a hypnotic state unless one becomes so relaxed that one actually does fall asleep. However, such an act would effectively end the hypnotic state.

Such "hallucinations" as you say depend entirely upon ones ability to visualize things.

Physically, certain drugs - benzodiazepines in particular - prevent people from entering into the hypnotic trance. Psychologically, any amount of fear (trepidation, distrust, etc.) will prevent trance development. Hypnosis is contraindicated for use with people with psychotic disorders since a lowering of ego-defenses may allow an uncontrolled upsurge from the unconscious and a psychotic episode. Obsessive Compulsives with chronic ruminating thought will not easily be able to allow the hypnotist to still the inner monologue - also preventing trance to develop, and paranoids are just not gonna let you 'in.' After all, paranoia is theoretically (psychoanalytically) caused by 'fear of rear assault.' Just some common deterrents to trance.

The ones who hypnotize us the most is ourselves. We allow and I think we also find some kind of pleasure in being in that state even if we're not fully aware of it. It must be the only reason we accept suggestions without a "real" reason.

i dunno.

i think if someone is amped up yelling about things on tv we like to agree with them, then we like to repeat what they say as our own opinion so we can feel like they did.

and so with other emotions and other memes.

Despite prohibition and an escalation of consequences for crimes associated with marijuana, use has not been significantly reduced. In fact, a majority of Americans have tried marijuana at least once in their lifetimes. Many well researched institutions have long argued for the decriminalization of cannabis for these very reasons.

Which one is more FUN to be a part of? Which one do you PAY ATTENTION to? TV is a kneejerk medium. Now if someone could stand up on a pulpit and read that paragraph, foaming at the mouth with anger, then maybe people would learn true things about cannabis.... but otherwise they'd rather see an angry father screaming at his daughter and then crying because he found pot in her room..... or a kid getting run over by stoned drivers in Wendy's.

this is not hypnosis perse...... but we tend to treat the TV like we would a credible person, and take its suggestions serously. It informs us about the state of the world, relatoinships, it tells us jokes...... pretty zany.

in fact i'm not sure how i got to posting this idea in relation to the content of this thread.

I guess because MushroomTrip said we like to be in such states.

Are we hypnotized..perhaps. It would be interesting to see the differences in consciousness between a group of people raised in environments with lots of electromagnetic pollution and group of people raised in environments with little to no EM pollution.

Aside from hypnosis though, trauma and our reactions to it are major factors in how we deal with life. Are we traumatized? hell yes. Hearing about death and destruction every day in the news is traumatic. Yes there's plenty of trauma to go around, no matter what your political views.

Markos, maybe you could speak on the affects of trauma on consciousness?
From what I've read it is well known in certain circles that trauma plus hypnosis is a good formula for creating Manchurian Candidate type personalities.

We've ALL been traumatized - it's called the birth trauma. Otto Rank wrote about it long ago but was not recognized for his insight. Stan Grof's Basic Perinatal Matrices is nothing short of genius.

Hypnotists have to be careful and take safeguards against clients who want repressed memories uncovered. Revivifying a trauma means living through it again psychologically and perhaps retraumatizing. Hypnotists have been sued for doing exactly what what requested by the client. I want to know ahead of the session, and in writing just what the client 'believes' the repressed event was so [s]he cannot claim shock, surprise and damage! Plus, sometimes the abreaction gets so painful as the client nears the 'event-horizon' that I'll stop the induction and emerge the client. Hey, if it's buried deeply enough and causing minimal symptoms (like spent radioactive waste in old salt mines), it is better left there than brought to the surface to do even more harm.

human's obviously belive a lot of nonsense--and adults tend to be ridiculouslly serious...

hypnosis? who knows?

anyway the metaphor associated with why people meditate is to: wake up

strangely a person meditating, who is more aware, appears in a trance to observers...
