i dont really understand hypnosis

does a subject actually lose consciousness completely? is there a chance he/she will wake up?

for example, I hate the dentist. Could someone really hypnotize me to sit happily through a tooth drilling, assuming I was willing to "be" hypnotized?

I think hypnosis is actually an option at some dentists nowadays. Although I'd say they'd still give you a local for a drilling.

I have never been hypnotized, although someone did try to a few years back. I think ALLOT depends on the person. Most people who have tried hallucinogens for example, probably couldn't be hypnotized because they would be strong mentally, which is what happened to me.

It's not really loosing consciousness, more similar to meditation. Like being in a state of extreme relaxation, allowing the patient to disassociate themselves from their surroundings (eg. Hypnotist, foreign room, distractions) and sought through their conscious and sub-conscious thoughts.

From what little I understand, I think they put you in a trance like state (the theta brainwave state?)....
I would like to see if someone could truly hypnotize me, as I have my doubts that I am able....

I think it is my ultimate denial for the deep subconscious fear of death that would prevent me from entering this state (haha)  :tongue:

Edit:  The trance/hypnosis state is from theta waves, not delta waves....

I was hypnotized once at my local county fair.  :lol:  Apparently I'm rather suggestible... I was culled out of the audience by being able to do some sort of finger test that determines your level of susceptibility to hypnosis (I can't remember the details, unfortunately).  Once I got on stage, myself and a few others were put under by closing our eyes and listening to the hypnotist's steady instructions to slowly relax and feel yourself going under.  This was similar to a self-hypnosis trance state that I can usually get myself into, but the clincher was when he announced "when I snap my fingers, you will be under hypnosis."

From that point on, things got pretty weird.  I was perfectly conscious of what I was doing, that I was under hypnosis, and that I was just playing along to the hypnotist's demands.  It was as if I could stop anytime I wanted to, except I just didn't want to stop.  The most illusory example of self-control that I've witnessed, personally.  Among things I was made to do was collapse at a snap of a finger, which felt like it happened almost involuntarily, and to say random words whenever the hypnotist bid it.  I came out of the trance state by the time I made my way back to my seat in the audience, luckily, as otherwise I would have been prompted to cluck like a chicken.  :grin:

All I can say is, the feeling is pretty much like thinking you're just acceding to the hypnotist's requests for the hell of it, but you never don't do what he requests.  Eerie stuff.

largely i think it is playing along
or cooperating
but weird stuff can happen when people work together,
also having your eyes closed puts you in another world.

I did try to hypnotize my girlfriend one night. After some massage to help he relax, I just had her breathing slowly and concentrating on my voice.
After 10mins she jumped up with a startled look in her eyes, and said that it was like falling asleep but she was still listening to me, like I was apart of her dream.

I'll try again sometime soon.
Hopefully have her sucking my cock while clucking!

It's partly playing-along and partly involuntary.

What cyper said pretty much summed it up.  Hypnosis makes you highly suggestible - or rather, plays upon the human psyche's desire to be suggestible.  In other words, a person who doesnt want to be hypnotised will NOT be hypnotised!  You have to want it.

And it doesn't put you under, or make you forget, or anything.  Hypnosis at the dentist won't do much. You still feel pain. There's not a whole lot of difference in your state while hypnotised and your state normally.  Hypnosis is just someone convincing you to relax, then telling you stuff and you accept it because you are so relaxed and you have no reason not to.

Oh, it's definitely REAL - I'm not saying it's fake.  This is the explanation behind the phenomenon.  This is why it works.

People have had cigarette burns inflicted on them during deep hypnosis, though, and it didn't hurt them.  You still feel the pain, you choose to ignore it somehow.

I have been hypnotized before and i was totally aware of what was going on, the hypnotist seems to have total control over your thoughts and actions just by making suggestions , its really a strange experience.

There has been at least one experiment in which a patient underwent major surgery using only hypnosis (no anaesthetic). I saw it on a BBC documentary a few years ago - the whole operation was filmed.

The documentary said that 10% of people cannot be hypnotised at all, while 10% are highly suggestible - they picked one such person for that experiment. Everyone else is in between.

I saw another documentary on discovery science (The Human Body: Pushing the Limits http://shopping.discovery.com/product-67166.html?jzid=40588012-21-0) where this has his teeth drilled with only hypnosis for pain. He is hypnotized to think the drill sounds are toy store noises and the pain registers as something like candy flavors. Really good documentary.

In Double Star by Heinlein, Larry is hypnotized to adore Martians and love their smell instead of finding them repulsive. I wonder if an effect like this is possible in reality.

But maybe if you could come out of hypnosis while in that frame of mind. If you could maintain that through your life, who knows what could happen?

More like they gain consciousness as completely as they are hypnotized.

Super awareness of any signal shows it for the information that it is. (truly)



I have been getting quite a bit better at hypnosis recently.

(The nice thing about hypnosis is that every believable claim of expertise becomes true.)

And as for the people who don't want to be hypnotized at all... well they are not hypnotized at any time.

not true

I've done the 'handshake interrupt' successfully on enough random strangers to know they don't have to want it... a little less than 50% of the people I try it on without any notice go into trance.

although it makes it a fuck of a lot easier when they actually want it, and far more likely to work.

Can anyone suggest a good book on hypnosis that is not geared towards sales people or DIY hypnosis?

I am interested in the actual range of possibilities and accepted techniques.
