"Do NOT think about Pink Elephants" & Hypnosis
    #3373665 -

What fascinates me about hypnosis is the ability to
suggest a command that is to be remembered and yet
is not to be remembered.
By that I mean, when hypnotists suggest something like
"the number 7 no longer exists" and then they make
people count their fingers etc...
the hypnotized persons mind is actively blocking out
the memory of the number 7 which is amazing.
I mean if u tell someone NOT to think of the number
7 in normal conciousness then they will inevitably think
of it since as soon as they remember the command they've
thought of the concept of the entity "7".
Yet under hypnosis, it seems that the brain can fool itself
wild...
discuss !
would love to hear more about hypnosis esp in regards to
lasting changes and theraputic/self help applications.

Yes, it's fairly amazing, but it's certainly no magic. I once hypnotized one of my best friends to pretend he had never met my other best friend (we're all best friends). After about 30 minutes of this, he shakes his head, and says "darnit, why do you play these silly parlor tricks?" Apparently, the whole time, at some level he knew he was supposed to forget my other friend, but suppressed it. He's an excellent hypnosis subject, too. Also, the trouble with hypnotic suggestions is that you generally need them to come from an external source. Self-hypnotizing to forget things is very difficult.

You can find lots of resources on the web regarding hypnosis, as well as many books at most public libraries. There are many different techniques. But far more important than the particular technique used is the "susceptibility" of the subject--some people are just excellent subjects, while others are not.

Yup, I've read tons of literature on the stuff mostly off the web and from books and downloaded hours and hours of hypnosis
sessions in mp3 format from the Gnutella Network via Gnucleus,
but I've never been hypnotized. Damn me, I guess I'm just not
suggestible enuff :frown:
I've been known to be quite stubborn, but the thing is that all
the stuff I listen to is stuff I want to change in myself
like getting my passion for programming and other activities back.
So I already know that it's a desirable change and hence I'm
open, in fact downright desperate, to get hypnotized so I can
instill some of these suggestions - or at least try...
