You share a common misunderstanding. This is the reason we give hypnotic pre-talks to dispel the commonly held misconceptions before proceeding. ALL hypnotism is self-hypnotism and the hypnotist is a guide, not someone who 'hypnotizes,' AS IF it is some power-trip. If you sleep, you are hypnotizable.  It has nothing whatsoever to do with 'beliefs' or wishful thinking or wanting it to be real. I once removed a 20 year phobia of hypodermic needles in one 45 minute session. The woman formerly would faint at the sight of one. I tested her after the procedure while she was still safely in the chair by providing a disassembled syringe which she then assembled herself. She did not faint. She was ecstatic since she and her husband wanted to make a baby but she could not bear the thought of blood tests and the possibility of an amniocentesis. YET, the woman did not believe that she had entered a hypnotic trance! Irrelevant. She met her goal in therapy. If YOU wanted to experience hypnosis, you would consent to it. The only emotional obstacle to hypnosis is fear.
